28.04.09 ALBUM AND LIVE GIG REVIEW BY BRISTISH MUSIC/THEBRITISH EMBASSY TOKYO!
The DeBretts
Eli and I went to see the much talked about new band The DeBretts play at Astro Hall last night, which was Vol.74 of Creativeman's New Blood series of shows. The new London based 4 piece recently played SXSW and have been getting a lot of attention even though they have yet to release an album in the UK. In fact their debut album 'Rage' has just been released in Japan by PonyUp records and I bought a copy after the show and I fully recommend it if you like a raw punk sound with strong melodies and powerful female vocal.
The live show was very raw and energetic and it was very clear the band were enjoying themselves and very happy to be in Japan. Having seen the band for the first time it is easy to understand the various comparisons to bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Siouxsie, Patti Smith and Blondie. For me the performance took me back to the first few times I went to see Siouxsie and the Banshees (along time ago!) as the lead singer Vonnie leapt around the stage kicking and punching the air with great anger and style.
The band are playing more shows across Japan over the next few days and you can find more details here http://www.ontheone.jp/index.php

16.04.08 THE DEBRETTS GET A GREAT REVIEW IN THE JAPANESE TIMES!
So off we went to Sxsw a crazy week of radio stations, live shows and hundreds of people, we drove the car a lot, ate once a day and met some nice people, we did a live interview with KLBJ, and a podcast for sxsw baby, there are a few reviews, blogs, podcasts, all of the links for which are below.
Quote- THE DUMBING OF AMERICA The DeBretts- Here’s my prediction. This band will come out of SXSW with the most hype.
They’re live shows are supposed to make the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s look like a quiet tea party by comparison. They’ve got Gordon Raphael (Strokes producer) producing for them, so you know they must be on to something.
They’re also one of those British bands that are quite the buzz in England and clearly have hype following them from across the water. The difference between this band and the other “hyped” bands is that these folks actually
deliver.
Article- Gibson Guitars recommends the DeBretts alongside white lies as one of the ten bands you must see at SXSW!: "Ten Bloody amazing bands to see at sxsw!"
Article - Music Snobbery "deBretts will Derock your Desocks off"
"Coming across the pond this March to join the hoards and whores in Texas is the London 3-piece The DeBretts. If you like you female fronted rock bands to be raw, unhinged and with long dark hair flying all over the places, than do yourself a favor and become familiar with lead singer Vonnie.
Comparisons to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are unavoidable. That Vonnie woman does give off that Karen O meets Debbie Harry while Allison Mosshart sits in the corner vibe. The music is straight up post-punk, new wave, and it got my attention. They actually reminded me a little of our dearly departed Long Blondes with their thick basslines and not afraid to be sexy vocals. I applaud any new band that wants to kick my ass sonically."
Article and Interview: "THE DUMBING OF AMERICA" "they have a passion, a knack for melody and a “punk” ferosity reminiscent of early Siouxsie or Yeah Yeah Yeah’s (whom they easily surpass)."
Articlle -NME.COM SXSW "''It sounds like a great opener for a fabulous festival ahead."
For everyone attending the festival from the UK, I recommend you two of your compatriots who travelled to Texas from our shores to deliver the shows of their lives.
First one is a great, dark and fiercely angst ridden London five piece The Debretts.
Their shows are full of relentlessly explosive energy, delivered in a very fast paced live set and dominated by the electrifying performance of charismatic female singer Vonnie DeBrett.
By the time you get to their third song, you will be shaking, jumping, dancing, moshing and shrieking, instantaneously demanding for more, and gasping for many more electrifying tunes from your freshly experienced Queen of Darkness.
Make sure that you get them right from the start of their set, as the energy perceived and assimilated through the enjoyment of their music will give you beams of happiness, gallons of sweat, legs that will jump and dance until shredded, with visuals not devoured since the early days of Siouxie and the Banshees.
there will be no substitute for the pleasure of indulging in their sounds during the forthcoming days, right there on your feet at the most pleasurable part of American South.''
JAPAN: So the DeBretts have signed a licesning deal to release our first album in JAPAN which will come out on PONY UP RECORDS ON APRIL 3RD 2009, followed by the band touring in Japan, excited we are indeed, so here are a few links:
CHECK OUT THE DEBRETTS ALBUM THE RAGE ON PONY UP RECORDS!
London-based, The deBretts, already heralded by Artrocker magazine as “ones to watch,” and fronting the cover of this months Tour Dates, are a four-piece post punk-pop band with an infectious blend of Blondie/ Siouxie Sioux cool, Sex Pistols urgency and Yeah Yeah Yeahs credibility. The explosive live shows have become something of a legend and now they are ready to make their highly anticipated arrival onto our radars.
Debut single: “The Rage” is taken from a collection of 6 tracks recorded earlier this year for their Ep “Arbiters of Etiquette” which began with PJ Harvey’s engineer: Ali Chant in Toybox Studios, Bristol. From this instrumental production it then crossed overseas to Berlin to be vocally polished by Gordon Raphael the mastermind behind The Strokes debut album. Additional tracks were also produced by Paul Epworth production accomplice: Elliot James (Bloc Party, Kate Nash, White Rose Movement) and Pedro Ferriera (The Darkness). You could say the proof is in the pudding…….
At the tender age of just four gigs old, the deBretts found themselves on tour with the Noisettes; they have now played with a plethora of bands including The Futureheads, The Holloways and the Mystery Jets. Gigging is their middle name touring in Austria, Paris and Rome on top of that making the finals for last years Camden Crawl and Road To V.
With just one demo to their name, the deBretts have managed to secure themselves a huge amount of radio support from XFMS Ian Camfields Unsigned winners, John Kennedy, Steve Harris, Huw Stephens on Radio 1, BBC Radio Oxford, all this combined with overseas airplay on various radio stations in Austria, France, Germany, U.S.A, Mexico and Japan.
This is a band whose mission statement was to stay off the radar and play gigs to become a better live act before choosing the right time to strike!
“The deBretts are ready for you....are you ready for them?”
