The Dirty Lowdown began with brothers Josh “Sunshine” McGill and Nick “Rooster” McGill writing, composing, and perfecting original music in the comfort of their Columbia, SC home in the late 1990s. The two would eventually form a group with some friends in high school, playing parties, school functions, and shows at West Columbia’s New Brookland Tavern. When the lead guitar player suddenly quit the band one night just hours before a gig at the NBT, the brothers asked their uncle, John “Logjammer” McGill if he could fill the spot. John gladly filled in for the show, and thus became a permanent fixture, filling the music with catchy hooks and striking leads. Early incarnations of the new band included A Single Step and Pink Lemonade. Several years and a few bass players later, Justin “J Murda” Marshall, an old friend of the brothers McGill, moved back to Columbia. Josh asked Marshall, a former lead guitar player, how he felt about trying the bass guitar out. Justin has since found his home with the instrument. With this final addition to the lineup, the band’s sound was given a solid backbone while adding more stage presence to the show.
The Dirty Lowdown are known most for their high energy, three plus hour shows that all fans of true rock ‘n’ roll music can appreciate. The members play with the attitude that if they are not having fun on stage, then neither is anyone in the crowd watching them. The band’s sound has evolved profoundly since the beginning, now spanning several musical genres. The Dirty Lowdown promise a memorable, lengthy, energetic set each night they perform.
