The Dogs are family. Not literally, but close enough. The group has been inseparable since middle school, sharing a deep passion for cooking, Neil Young and making music. The Dogs are spread across the land: vocalist/guitarist Peter Walters in Minneapolis; bassist Matt Bachmann in Washington; vocalist Rivkah Gevinson in Norway; and multi-instrumentalist/producer James Krivchenia in Boston. Despite being separated, the Dogs remained close by exchanging demos. By the time they had reunited for a summer in Chicago, they had accumulated roughly 50 demos and settled on 15 songs to record. Camping was recorded with a few microphones and a laptop – with a beer budget that may have been more than a studio budget. Outside of four hours of studio time that the band won from the Chicago Deli's Artist of the Month poll, Camping was recorded completely independently. The final weeks of summer found the Dogs in La Farge, WI, where they holed up in a cavernous garage attic for a last recording stand. After a few bonfires, some fresh veggies from their Amish neighbors, The Dogs finished recording Camping. www.thedogsmusic.net Download 'Camping' from thedogs.bandcamp.com Pay What You Want

The Dogs

Bio:

The Dogs are family. Not literally, but close enough. The group has been inseparable since middle school, sharing a deep passion for cooking, Neil Young and making music. Now, at the ripe ages of 21 and 22, The Dogs are spread across the land: vocalist/guitarist Peter Walters studies creative writing in Minneapolis; bassist Matt Bachmann runs his college’s radio station in Washington; vocalist Rivkah Gevinson spent her last year studying art in Norway; and multi-instrumentalist/producer James Krivchenia took the last semester off from music school in Boston to intern with producer Peter Katis at Tarquin studios. Despite being separated, the Dogs remained close by exchanging demos of songs they were working on. By the time they had reunited for a summer in Chicago, they had accumulated roughly 50 demos and settled on 15 songs to record.

Camping was recorded with a few microphones and a laptop - but don’t call it lo-fi. The group strove for a hybrid sound, embracing the character of their lack of equipment without looking at it as a limitation. Their beer budget may have been larger than their studio budget, but the Dogs never let that stop them from making the record they wanted to make. Outside of four hours of studio time that the band won from the Chicago Deli’s Artist of the Month poll, The Dogs recorded everything from their “home studio,” which happened to move every few weeks- allowing them the freedom of recording whenever inspiration hit. The final weeks of summer found the Dogs in La Farge, WI, where they holed up in a cavernous garage attic for a last recording stand. After a few bonfires, some fresh veggies from their Amish neighbors, and a session of Pete screaming into a trash can that Matt held over his head, The Dogs finished recording Camping.

So what does Camping sound like? It’s been jokingly self-described as “family rock,” “pretty punk,”and “pretentious pre-teen pop.” But that makes it sound like a Justin Biebz/Avril Lavigne collaboration. The best way to describe the album is through the music that inspired it. The songs are short and concise with an emphasis on texture. Camping was influenced by the blown out aesthetic of Neutral Milk Hotel, the diversity of song-styles featured on Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk, the lyrical flair of John Darnielle and the Mountain Goats, the 90s awesomeness of Third Eye Blind, and the grandiosity of The Cure (to name afew).
