We have been passing down the Word of God from generation to generation for thousands of years. In Deuteronomy 6 God commands it, and Psalm 78 extols it, saying, "We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done." What an awesome, God-given responsibility! We who have seen the power and the wonders of God have been called to pass on that redeeming knowledge to the next generation.
When I was a child, I remember listening to a radio program and hearing a song that set the words of Joshua 1:9 to a simple, memorable melody. Though I only heard it once, since that day I have been able to quote Joshua 1:0 as easily as John 3:16. Music has an astonishing ability to lodge itself in the deepest parts of our minds. Long after we forget particular events from our past we can still sing the songs we heard along the way. What better way is there, then, to pass on the hallmark truths of our faith than through music?
The Doorpost Songs is a collection of timeless truths from Scripture set to music. Occasionally words have been shaped to aid the lyrical flow of the songs, or to make a concept easier for children to understand, but the vast majority of the text is taken straight from the Bible. These songs tell just a small part of a much bigger story - the story of a redeeming God communicating His love to all of humanity, and they help us to live this story as our own.
