The Dyeing Merchants is the brainchild of Calgary alumni Jzero Schuurman (Lucid 44, Jane Vain, Grandfather Fire, Gutterawl, Brittle Siren). Since moving from Calgary Jzero has established himself into the Victoria art scene. As an acting board member in "the fifty fifty arts collective" he his making a name for himself on the West Coast. The Dyeing Merchants where to be an extension of his solo project Psychic Pollution but with a full band. In time however TDM developed it's own sound with contributions from Renee Crawford (Diamonds), Robert Coslett, and Fraser MacGillivray for this self titled release. The music created has been very difficult to classify. The songs border on indie rock, but they also have folk experimental elements as well. Jzero being a long time proponent of lo-fi atmospheric sound deciding to record this new project in the fifty fifty gallery using the natural re-verb of the room. A guerrilla style recording using a portable studio and experimenting with several different mic techniques and amp placements. No digital meddling aside from transfers and mastering had been utilized to create this lush atmospheric record. True to the analog mentality of such artists as WOMEN it was Jzero's mission to avoid very little to no post effects in order to maintain a true analog sound. The record is a first step for The Dyeing Merchants who have been playing regularly and are planning a Spring tour and a follow up recording.
