Influences
Too many to list, so we'll say that we listen to groups, artists, and works that could be classified as rock, jazz, metal, hip hop, electronica, R&B, pop, & classical music as well as all of their sub-genres, fusions, and imitations.
The Eighth Sea began as en experiment between two high school sophomores that wanted to teach themselves to write expressive acoustic music together. They quickly hit it off and managed to write a couple of catchy tunes that they wanted to share with their greater high school population. They recruited a top notch bass/guitar player, a stellar drummer, and a stunning keybordist to turn their songs into five piece arrangements, and then began performing at school functions. With their original songs and ability to play really catchy cover tunes, the Eighth Sea quickly became popular and regularly played at school fundraisers and coffeehouses. In the Spring of 2005, in an effort to culminate their high school musical career, the Eighth Sea recorded a seven song EP of original songs entitled Mood Swing and were able to afford the venture simply because their loyal fans and friends at BCA all pre-ordered the cd even before it was recorded. Much was learned during the process, and four of the members left for college to pursue their own personal careers. Absence made the heart grow fonder, though, and during every break the band got together to try writing songs and learning new covers. By the time freshman year was over, it was clear that everyone wanted to keep the project going.
The Eighth Sea is now in a sort of incubation period as we continue to write and learn material during our time off between semesters. Even though we are all in different colleges, we are working very hard to keep in touch so that we can keep creating the music that you all love. Though it's tough when we can only work for a couple months a year, we are all growing very much as individuals and the music shows it.
So thanks to everyone who listened to our stuff and supported us throughout high school, and thanks to you for continuing to listen to our music. We are excited to make this into something we're all serious about doing professionally, and to take our music and career to the next level.
