The Electric Effect were formed in 1996, from the remnants of “The Vnecks”. Keyboard player Jp Braddock and guitarist vocalist Pat Gunning had decided that the sound needed to be softened and songs lengthened and drawn more into the world of psyche . Evidence of this can be heard on their first album “From the centre of the sun” an album extremely well received as the reviews can testify.
The EFX toured in spring `99 and among many tripped out gigs around the UK, one of the most memorable was with Gong ( 60`s psyche overlords ). After a break at the end of `99 , it was decided not to continue as a live band , but to concentrate on recorded material.
So for the next few years the EFX was a collaboration between the two founding members.
The first product of this writing / recording partnership was “Music to drive tanks by” recorded at various choice locations though the midlands to north Yorkshire the album represents a defining moment for the band “with its aural Soundscapes and Tripped out mantras including birds and sea” this album is seen as a vast collage of blues / hip hop grooves / ambiance and very real instruments. “This album is a hidden gem that needs to be heard”.
The next E F X album is finished and to be released soon. Titled “de- reverberation” it has the same strong reference points as “Music to drive tanks by” This is what they had to say about “de – reverberation”
What is it we like or dislike about music , ask yourself?
For me an album should make some kind of sense, its image should be constant from start to finish. I do think it’s possible for music to be visual, to draw pictures in the listeners mind, weather these pictures are memories or evolved from the music doesn’t matter … its about capturing people. Its also nice to dance!
I think the simplicity in our music is its strength, you cant dream to 28 chords and a slap bass!! We have six minute songs with two chords, these chords become like a mantra and it’s what happens between these chords that are important. Imagine painting a wall white and putting a Picasso in the middle of it, your eyes are always drawn to the middle, but the white is what makes it good.
