The history of Empty House consists of three distinct eras. The first of these eras begins in the year 1979
when the band known as Harlequin got together to play and record a kind of music that would irritate
most people. The music was harsh, atonal and not unlike the sound of dying road kill on a hot August
night. Deliberate yes, as a response to the then current trend of posers, disco phonies and Donna Summer
wannabes. Harlequin was always rotating it's members with a core personnel of Michael Allison on bass and
piano; Jeff Baker on drums; Tony Carlsen on guitar; Jason Peterson on voice, piano and saxophone and
Bruce Thomas on piano and saxophone. Alternate musicians were Tom Young on guitar and Michael Farris
on Drums. In 1980 when the idea of playing experimental music was abandoned for a more "commercial"
approach Michael, Tony, and Jason moved to New York City where the second phase took place.
They changed their name to Empty House.
After a couple of more years dabbling in electronic explorations Jason was replaced with former China Shop
bassist Steve Cohen. Pop music was now the focus and Jeff had finally made the trek to NYC and became
their full-time drummer. In 1985-1987 the band wrote many songs in the hopes of acquiring a record contract,
playing many shows in and around the NYC area to some degree of success. Shows at The Bitter End, CBGB,
The LimeLight and The Pyramid Club delighted all who attended but alas, no recording contract was forthcoming
and eventually the band broke up finding Michael Allison moving to San Francisco into semi-retirement until in 1992
going solo and eventually recording as Darshan Ambient, releasing several CD's on his own. Jeff Baker and Steve Cohen
stayed in New York become quite successful on their own. Tony Carlsen has since become reclusive and nobody is really
sure whatever happened to him.
After Michaels illness in 2007 in which he almost died, his wife Nicky, close friends Tom Young, Nic Caciappo and Michael Farris
encouraged him to again reform the band as Empty House with Tom Young on guitar, Michael Farris on drums and Chris Pearre boards. They are now writing, recording and performing new music as well as classic Empty House songs from
the 1985-1987 period. The sound of Empty House has changed over the years but it is still progressive, modern and thrilling to
all who hear them.
