The Excerpts were an original pop rock group that was active in and around New Haven,Ct. from 1980 until 1985. The band was founded by Jon Brion,Steve Harris and Dean Falcone while on school holiday in early 1980. They had all previously been members of Vizions, a high school cover band. Originally 'the X-cerpts', the first live performance was on July 7,1980 at the prominent new music venue- Ron's Place (the 'casa de punk') in New Haven. The original live line up featured Joe Kosh on lead guitar (also a Vizions alumnus) for the first few shows. Michael (Spike) Priggen replaced Kosh in late summer 1980.The band recorded their first demos at the original Presence Studios in East Haven,Ct. Always a band of fits and starts, the line up went through numerable changes. Local New Haven legend, the late Wally Gates was a featured member for several years as was noteworthy drummer BJ Zampa. The Excerpts toured Japan for six weeks in early 1981 in support of John Lennon's Bag One exhibit. The fruitful songwriting collaboration between Harris (lyrics) and Brion (music) produced many creative and memorable songs that still hold up well nearly thirty years on. The Excerpts were gaining in notoriety and popularity at the time of their break-up. Brion went on to be a sought after producer and composer. Falcone has performed with many local artists, most recently the Shellye Valukas Experience and the Manchurians. Harris continues to write and produce.Balga continues to perform with various ensembles.
