"The Exploding Madonna is all about noise. Not just random noise, but a controlled noise which is highly structured in its attack. It's a cacophonous mix of guitars, synthesizers, and distorted vocals, burying the listener in a complex and overwhelming wall of absolute sound. The irony comes in the fact that the songs have their central basis in pop rock, albeit this foundation is buried under layer upon layer of massive sound, which in turn gives the overall appearance of progressive rock. This works in spite of the obvious musical contradictions, as some sort of hybrid musical monster" +++
The Exploding Madonna began in 2002 as Paul Burdack on guitar, Christian Fabian on bass guitar, Jeff McGriff on drums and later, John McNeece on sampler, electric piano & synthesizer. At this time the band primarily played instrumental improvisations and a recording entitled "orchardkeeperlivesounddeconstruct" was made consisting of edited and overdubbed improvisations. In 2003, the band had a change up with McGriff leaving to play a stint with Iron & Wine, and drummer Mike Coleman was recruited for drumming purposes. Following McNeece's departure, the Exploding Madonna began to focus more upon writing songs capturing the spirit of the earlier improvised sound. Synthesizer use became more frequent among the three remaining members and Fabian added vocals to the mix. Work began upon a recording at this time, and in early 2006, "The Exploding Madonna" CD was pressed. Joining the band in late 2005 was video artist/painter, Matt Ralph, adorning the band's live performances with a dazzling spectacle of films, videos & flashing lights; the perfect complement to the raging wall of sound & bliss that is an Exploding Madonna concert. In October 2007, following a year and a half-long hiatus, The Exploding Madonna have reconvened and are in the midst of recording a series of new songs, writing new music and occasionally exposing themselves to the public.

I coughed up an opaque loogie today, and when I spit it into my hand, I looked closely as it immediately took the shape of Chris' cranium, then it slid through my fingers and onto the hot concrete where it started to bubble and dry into a perfect likeness of the Mother Mary. I tried to save it for you, but a dog came by and licked it up. C'est la vie.
