The Exploding Madonna began in 2002 as Paul Burdack on guitar, Christian Fabian on bass guitar, Jeff McGriff on drums and later, John McNeece on sampler, electric piano & synthesizer. At this time the band primarily played instrumental improvisations and a recording entitled "orchardkeeperlivesounddeconstruct" was made consisting of edited and overdubbed improvisations. In 2003, the band had a change up with McGriff departing for different territories, and drummer Mike Coleman was recruited. Following McNeece's departure, the Exploding Madonna began to focus more upon writing songs capturing the spirit of the earlier improvised sound. Synthesizer use became more frequent among the three remaining members and Fabian added vocals to the mix. Joining the band in late 2005 was video artist/painter, Matt Ralph, adorning the band's live performances with a dazzling spectacle of films, videos & flashing lights. Work began upon a recording at this time, and in early 2006, "The Exploding Madonna" CD was pressed, after which the band promptly broke up. In October 2007, following a year and a half-long hiatus, The Exploding Madonna reconvened. Currently the group is in the midst of recording a series of new songs, writing new music, and playing the occassional show.
