Madelyn's Interests
|
| General | The Eyes Have It is filled with irony, with history and humor to balance things. It’s about different attempts to create offspring, and the results of those attempts. It’s about a woman named Kate who doesn’t quite fit the norm, whose mother committed suicide when Kate was just a youngster and the only positive input from her father CJ, incapable of affection was to teach her about the family’s ancestral family glove manufacturing business, which comes in handy when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and she takes over. It’s about a set of triplet private investigators. Kate hires one of them, Lucas, to help her uncover some long held secrets. It’s about Kate’s stepmother, Silver Feather Floating, who reveals those secrets, and about Silver Father’s daughter. It’s about an alleged abduction, a different set of parents, blackmail, arson, attempted murder, and a disappearance. It’s about prejudice on all sides of the picture. It is about Jews’ and Native American’s forced conversion. It’s about loving and and not being loved in return, and about the fragility of one’s state of mind. It’s about healing and acceptance, and all of this amidst the ongoing debate: is there intelligent life beyond our planet and if so, have they visited?
Key words: conception, triplets, adoption, birth parents, gloves, New Mexico, weapons testing, vision impairment, alleged abductions, Roswell, conversos, Native Americans, homeless, Alzheimer’s, bigotry, oil painting, depression,
convalescent homes., Miami Beach, hurricanes, Shiva.

About me:
Although I’ve written most of my life, its all been ‘just for me.’ Then my writing became personal experience pieces to share with my family, essays, newsletter articles, etc. until one summer week in Colorado at one of Vonnie Wheeler’s Explore programs, I was newly stimulated to enter the world of writing fiction by author, professor Rex Burns. Even after that, the thought of having an audience for my work never entered my mind until around 1997. That’s when I enrolled in a Lifescripts© creative writing course led by Michael Thornton under the auspices of the University of Miami’s Institute of Retired Professionals. He published a collection of our stories and poems called Full Circle. Now I was published! What seduction!
One day I started to write a short story. The story began to develop arms and legs, and the characters started to talk to me, and when I asked Mike if I should break it off and move on to something else, he suggested I let the creativity flow and go with it as long as it lasts. And so, I did. I gave birth to The Eyes Have It..i
Ever since it’s been a reality check. Between writing, and writing ‘THE END’ on the last page of my manuscript, thinking I was done; searching for an editor, then succeeding there, searching for an agent, querying said agents and publishers, all the while re-writing,and thinking I was finally done; re-editing, proof-reading, thinking this time I was really truly done; finding Mill City Press, re re-proofing, and suddenly, ten years later, I am nearly done!
There is an additional oddity involved with the writing of The Eyes Have It, several meaningful synchronicities occurred. Doing research on the possible abduction portion of the story, I discovered a longtime friend involved in a book on the subject; his involvement helped propel me along. In doing research on the area’s early Jewish citizens, I found a most informative book on the subject which was, unbeknownst to me at the time, written by two good friends of my editor, John Daniel. The triplet angle was a combination of things. Another friend was one of a set of triplets and I loved hearing their stories. Since writer’s block is never a problem, and since I have two other stories buzzing around in this brain, I decided to make The Eyes Have It the first of a trilogy, with each of the three novels done with a different triplet in the limelight.

Who I'd like to meet:
My readers would have graduated high school, most going on to higher educations, watched Star Trek when they were younger and Star Wars, older. They know about the vast expanse of the Universe and its mysteries. They have creative outlets such as music, science, the arts, which allows them a fertile imagination. They live anywhere in the world and work at jobs from minimum wage to executive positions, from civil servant to entrepreneurial. Their hobbies may range from gambling to sports, to amateur astronomy.
Since an underlying theme of my book is vision, both through eyes and the mind’s eye, I’d like to meet people with open minds, those able to embrace possibility. I am thrilled with the wisdom of both the young and old, and enjoy interacting with them. For me, this existence of ours is an endless classroom, where learning is ongoing, not just about life but about the craft of writing. Whether I understand or agree with the individual expressions thereof, I appreciate the act of creativity, be it art, literature, science, music, crafts, architecture, etc. I adore sports of all kinds and their participants, and am both annoyed by and caught up in the madness of competition. Most of all I prefer people who don’t take themselves too seriously. Were you aware there are many among us, nearly four million, who believe they have been abducted by aliens? There are folks of advanced intellectual accomplishment who are debunkers of such a thing. These then are the types of people I’d like to meet, those on both sides of the question.
The Eyes Have It does explore some abnormal abilities but does not indulge in detailed alternate lifeforms. Rather, the storyline executes a passionate debate: is there intelligent life beyond our planet and have 'they' made an appearance here, with a serious suggestion thereof through insinuation of paranormal. The Eyes Have It is about preconceived opinions, prejudicial generalizations, and their combined effect over the generations. A woman’s life is at risk, and her ex beau joins her private investigator to try to save her. My readers can put themselves in my characters’ situations and identify with them. People who read and enjoyed Carl Sagan’s book Contact or saw the movie version, or follow the writing of authors like Michael Flynn, Jodi Picoult, or Jack Finney will enjoy this book.
