   The Fame Formula's Blurbs
About me:

Ever wanted to be famous? Ever wondered how those who have achieved an extraordinary level of fame have managed to keep it? Ever wondered what it is that that makes so many of us so fascinated by, and even covetous of, famous people. Or what makes anyone want to be famous, just for the sake of it?

In The Fame Formula, Mark Borkowski, one of the Britain’s leading publicists, casts an insider’s eye over the astonishingly rapid growth of the fame industry, from silent movies to the internet and the instant news age. The book offers insights into how to come become famous and how to maintain that fame, using the stunts and practises of great, though often forgotten, publicists as illustrations. It highlights the extraordinary leaps of imagination that publicists used to promote movies, people and products.

These are the people who sat on and hatched an ostrich egg to promote the film The Egg and I; the people who insured Betty Grable’s legs for $1 million to her in the press; the people who restrained Tom Cruise’s sofa bouncing tendencies; the people who dressed Marilyn Monroe in a potato sack for a glamour shoot; the people who spun webs of invented live for movie stars whose sexual preferences would have outraged the public in the early days of Hollywood; the people who sold a vision of Hollywood that has become reality.

Borkowski has discovered a scientific formula for the maintenance of fame, which is revealed in the book, that will help anyone wishing to achieve fame to do so, using the examples set by the great publicists as a guide to getting their name noticed.

If you sign up to this MySpace page you will receive six exclusive out-takes from The Fame Formula, presenting some of the craziest, greatest and shrewdest stunts ever played on a willing public in the name of making something or someone famous, along with a selection of revealing photographs.

When the book is published, a competition, in association with Borders Books, will be launched to find a talent who can be promoted by Mark Borkowski for a fifteen months, using the Fame Formula as a template for perpetuating their success. If you think you have the talent, beauty, skill or staying power to become a lasting celebrity, visit Borders Books online and submit your video from August 4th.

The Fame Formula by Mark Borkowski is available to pre-order from Borders Books online.

The Daily Telegraph has listed Mark Borkowski's Fame Formula event at the Edinburgh Festival as the 83rd hottest Festival event. Not as interesting as Rob Deering's Boobs 2008, apparently, but more compelling than Karita Mattila, the star soprano, and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

83: Mark Borkowski
One of showbiz's more charming public relations men explores the ancestry of his questionable trade.
Long fascinated by the likes of Barnum, Ripley, and the old-time Hollywood hucksters, Borkowski has produced a book, The Fame Formula: How Hollywood's Fixers, Fakers and Star Makers Created the Celebrity Industry.
He probably shouldn't be allowed - but he is. Forewarned is forearmed. Charlotte Square Gardens (0845 373 5888), Aug 22.

"I am not sure if I like lists..." says Mark.

Hunt on for UK's Fame Formula

By STAFF REPORTER
Published: 07 Jul 2008, The Sun

THE X Factor could have a new rival as one of the UK's top celebrity agents launches a competition to find the country's next star.

PR giant Mark Borkowski - the man who represents music greats Prince, Led Zeppelin and Van Morrison - has teamed up with bookshop Borders to launch the contest and celebrate the release of his new book The Fame Formula, out August 1.

The book explores the PR stories behind the stars of the last 100 years.

And from August 4, celeb wannabes can send in their video entries or use video booths at six Borders' stores.

A Borders spokesman said: “Whether you are an actor, poet, a writer, a musician or model, or if there is something else extraordinary you can do that you are busting to communicate with the world, this is your chance to be famous!”

A shortlist of 20 will be unveiled in December 2008 with the winner announced in April 2009.

The winner will scoop 15 months of agency representation to launch their showbiz career.

My dear Mr Borkowski,

I have now read your inexpressibly delightful tome detailing the rise of celebrity and am delighted to say that I thrilled to every moment of it. It is an honor to be cited as the founder of modern publicity and strange indeed to read of the adventures of all those wonderful people who crossed the globe in my wake, alerting all and sundry to the wonders of the strange, the magnificent and the decidedly glamorous world of film and fame!

Rest assured, my dear sir, that I shall proselytize amongst those that know and love me for this fine history, this Fame Formula of yours. It may be vanity on my part, even a touch of hubris, to want the world to know of my children-in-spirit, but I hope I shall be forgiven it.

Yours most sincerely,
Phineas Barnum

Borders teams up with Pan Mac
07.07.08 Graeme Neill

Aspiring stars could win PR representation from the firm that represents Prince, Led Zeppelin and Noel Edmonds in a new competition from Borders. The bookseller has teamed up with Pan Macmillan in a campaign to promote the launch of The Fame Formula by PR guru Mark Borkowski.

From 4th August, www. borders. co. uk will invite customers to upload a video of their talent that they believe deserves recognition. The retailer will also run instore events with Borkowski with video booths for customers to try their luck. Borkowski will appear at London’s Oxford Street on 12th August, Islington on the 19th, and Glasgow on the 21st. There will be a further three dates to be confirmed towards the end of September in Bournemouth, Cardiff and Leeds.

Entries will be judged by a panel of representatives from Borders, Pan Macmillan as well as Borkowski. A shortlist of 20 will be announced at the end of October, with the winner revealed in April 2009. The winner will be awarded 15 months of representation by the Borkowski PR agency.

Released on 1st August, the publicist tells the star-studded and sometimes bizarre stories of the public relations people behind the biggest stars of the past century.
