I'm so mad that I'm not going to get to see you next week. Someone will pay and pay dearly. (I'm not sure who that will be. Probably a bottle of wine.)

"So he shall come on wings of fire

and his heart shall be bound in the bands of victory."
~The book of the Dragon V:III
(This is shown as the only opening credits to season 1)
Ryder was just an average Yeoman in the small village of Horgid. As a young man, Ryder was very controlling and stubborn. But he was wonderful with livestock of the same character. Horgid is on the edge of the valley of Toreg, surrounded by woods, where the elves drove men back in the Elven wars years ago. Although even Ryder's grandfather was too young to have been in the wars, the sentiment towards elves, or those who relate to magic of any kind, is far from positive in Ryder's society.
In the first episode, Ryder is in pursuit of a vagrant goat that has been eating from peoples' fields and gardens. He has been commissioned by the villagers to catch and re-train the stubborn animal in his typical rough hands-on way. However, the wily goat runs into the woods, which Ryder has never entered before save once in his childhood, a time that he does not remember.
Too stubborn to admit defeat, he summons his anger and follows the goat into the woods, where after a short chase, the goat is promptly transformed into a short, somewhat stubby, broad-shouldered young man a few years older than Ryder. It is this way that Ryder meets the wizard apprentice-GAVIN, who had unfortunately been stuck in the form a goat for three days until he could find and eat the right herb to undo th

And besides, it depends on what type of elves you're speaking of. Tolkien elves are taller than humans, as are the Elvish races in games like Shadowrun. Grantedm D&D elves are a little on the small side, but they're prettym so I can deal with that.
:-)
BWT, I loved the trailer for the pilot and hope it gets picked up.
Just remember that a great philosopher once said "Life's short and hard like a bodybuilding elf"
hey, it's not my fault that Munchinland scared me, or Willow, or this really freaky midget clown with a smile that never left it's tiny little face as he stole my lollypop that my daddy bought for me right before he went out to the store to buy cigarettes, but never came back. I just have "little people" issues, ok? Everyone's scared of something!
Additionally, I think because Season 3 ended Gavin bravely sacrificing his life for Elvina when they became entrapped in the Loch Ives Portal of Doom, Elvina will always have a sort of unrequited love for him, so that when Kristopher Malouf was brought on as Gavin's supposed original mentor, Warvolio(a wizard so powerful that he had to remain nameless save his title, lest his enemies seek him out for most of season four) she in many ways blamed him -consciously or subconsciously- for Gavin's death.
Yet now-and this shows what good writing and particularly solid character development can do-four seasons later she has come to trust him deeply-so deeply as to often recognize that he knows her better than she knows herself. And will this lead to romance? Perhaps-I'm not quite so convinced as you and as you yourself observed odds for this plot twist aren't that great despite the plethora of fan fiction devoted to the couple in just such a context.
As for Pool's chemistry with Malouf-who else is there to have chemistry with? The only other character established enough to be a love interest is now played by(shudder) Bakula. And it's a little hard to have chemistry with someone who's emotional level is identical in practically every scene.
A response to fellow member Sarah Eleanor's provocative stance on the Elvina/Gavin/Xenos love triangle:
I personally longed to see Elvina with the man I believe is her true love: Warvolio the battling Wizard. Although it has yet to be firmly established in the script, the palpable chemistry between actors Pool and Malouf sizzles and demands theatrical satisfaction. Becuase of my constant finger-crossing for this plot twist which has yet to occur, I could never invest fully in what many others found to be the crucial plot line of an entire season.
Friend and fellow member from the Virginia Chapter of the DF fan club "Robin" snail-mailed me this poignant eulogy for Mike Patrick I wanted to share. Sayeth Robin:
I remember, as I think we all do, where I was when Mike Patrick died. Not that the "we" refers to everyone remembering where I was when Mike Patrick died but, I think, rightly I'm sure, that there is a shared feeling of sadness, nay, loss, at what could have been.
How could Scott Bakula, who was, admittedly, the "glue" that held together the "broken vase" that was "Murphy Brown" in it's mid-run, and certainly the "foundation" for the "mid-range townhouse" that was "Quantam Leap", hope to rise to the task of taking "DF" to the "next level" as it were?
Only a Mike Patrick could ask "how high, is too high?", as he did during what, I believe we all remember, as his final interview for Starlog.
I think I'm right about this.

Thank you, Robin.
