“What’s with the status, that you posted yesterday/ So a thousand friends could read it and have a virtual public say.” Yes folks, we’re so in love with Facebook that appreciative anthems in awe of its destructive potential are beginning to trickle in. The line between love and hate gets no thinner than the Fay Rays’ Social Network Greed, a melodic and catchy pop-rock song about the unwitting tactlessness of some of its users “We didn’t do this to be the first ones, it’s just that it’s very topical and it was a great pop song,” the group insists.
Although there are cynical lines about “joining a group to free the world”, the Fay Rays maintain that this just the way it is, what everybody is thinking. “It’s just a piece of social commentary from people who love music.”
While the lyrics are witty and well-crafted, the song has no intentions of taking itself too seriously. Its mood is generally playful, with the melody of the appealing chorus sometimes being substituted with playful lah-lah sing along parts. Crafted by guys with a few hundred songs between them, it has all the makings of a radio anthem, with tasteful riffs, personable yet effective singing and heartwarming harmonies.
