New Haven’s venerable contra dance band was first formed in 1978 by Paul Englesberg and Pete Spicer. The present core band is Jim Sirch (banjo, whistles, and bodhran), Willow Sirch (fiddle), Gary Wikfors (mandolin and mando-ephemera) and Norman Plankey (guitar) with appearances by Colin Healy (fiddle/mandolin), Ambrose Verdibello (fiddle/banjo uke), Pat Plankey (upright bass) and other local musicians.
The Fiddleheads band has seen many other fine players down through the years, including Michael Koenigsberg, Ellen Cohn, Skip Healy, and Michael Bell.
They are the house band for the New Haven Country Dancers and enjoy playing for visiting callers like Pat Rust, Dan Pearl, Steve Holland and Al Brozek.
"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
thanks........I keep this page up for Django since his computer knowledge don't get him to far..unlike his fantastic guitar playing. I am his uncle in Illinois. Thanks again.
