The First Half Second / 6 Track EP / Rich C, 11/01/2005 -
After forming at University in Manchester in 2002, The First Half Second haven't looked back. Their fraught and intense music has been compared to an illustrious list of art-rock, punk rockers. Joy Division and XTC are the most prominent influences apparent to High Voltage... 'Wait by the Money' is a riotous and ferocious noise assault, utilising singer James Gibson's mind-bending vocal delivery... EP highlight 'Another Side', the most sombre track on the EP, is steeped in atmosphere and emotion and is effortlessly brilliant -
Night And Day / Manchester / CA and DH 28/02/2005 -
... the singer sports a pair of disturbingly intimate trousers that seem almost designed to cut off the blood flow. To his left stands a guitarist with his faced caked in white face paint. Worrying. It's not surprising after all that The First Half Second are as gothic and as morbid as a Transylvanian cemetery. They're certainly from around the new wave musical era but they favour the darker, less funky side of things a la Siouxsie and the Banshees... a haunting Patti Smith cover complete with gorgeous dual vocals rings out above all else but The First Half Second possess more than a share of decent melodies and captivating minimalist guitar lines... -
