My interest in "dance" music came about after years of playing the Bass guitar and loving the deep, phat, sounds that I could create.
At this time the likes of The Prodigy and The Chemical brothers were muscling into the Indie/Alternative scene (where I first started to DJ) and it fuelled my interest even further.
These tracks were a change from the guitar sound that I had loved since I was a kid and it blew me away.
I started going to Techno and Breaks events in Reading and would be regularly seen at Checkpoint Charlie, M4 music and various other nights, pretty much any night I could.
I didn't really start getting seriously into mixing "dance music" until 1997 when I got my first proper residency at Alleycat Live, in Reading (now the Fez Club), with my best friend Chris.
We were asked to fill the Saturday night slot that was left at the club by the departure of Checkpoint Charlie in the summer of 1997.
We were given free reign over what we played so we played out a wide mix of music from Garage, Speed Garage, house, Trance, Breakbeat, Rave, Drum n Bass and Techno. The tempo got faster the later into the night we got.
This night was very popular with the open-minded clubbing masses of Reading and we were regularly sold out (which is always a great boost for your first residency) within in the first couple of hours of the doors being open.
This night gave us the springboard to expand and develop into other musical fields.
At this point "Big Beat" appeared on the "dance" scene and broke the musical boundaries down to one base level of having fun in the clubs. There was no musical stipulation as to the style played as long as it flowed and the party was jumping.
Hip Hop was played next to House music flowing into Drum n Bass and back out through Rock records. The only limitations was the imagination and being a big fan of music generally this meant that I could pull on many genres for inspiration.
With Chris, under our newly labeled DJ collective name - The Freestyle Vinyl Junkies (FVJs), we played all over Reading, Bristol, Southampton and beyond, bringing the party to students and seasoned clubbers alike who just wanted to go out and have a good time.
We had many memorable nights of full on partying that left us hanging the following day but we were happy in the knowledge that we had entertained crowd and blown up the dancefloors wherever we had played.
I moved to Bristol at the end of 97 and got submerged in the Drum N Bass/Breakbeat scenes of the city and had my eyes opened to some of the best clubs I'd ever been to and some killer tunes that I would never have come across in Reading.
I started DJing under the name "Delta", when playing Drum n Bass and Dave Junkie (as and extension of the FVJs name) when I was playing Breaks, Big Beat and House.
Of recent I have moved to using the name "Fixed Point" as Delta was used by another producer/DJ and Dave Junkie didn't seem right anymore.
Over the following years I played alongside some awesome DJs such as: Andy C, Jumpin Jack Frost, Mickey Finn, Jon Stapleton, XS & Powder, Ray Kieth, Fabio & Grooverider, Jon Pleased, Bailey, Nicky Black Market, Mulder and more recently the likes of Pendulum, High Contrast and Fingerthing.
I started getting into making music about 2/3 years ago, as I would be DJing and have a great idea for a track but wouldn't be able to do anything about it due to not having the knowledge to make the idea come to life.
In this short time I have produced some utter rubbish (to be perfectly honest) but I have also made some tracks that I think are pretty good - a few of these can be heard in the music player above.
More tracks can be heard on www.junkpilerecordings.com
I have also been into the Mash Up genre of music where I use aspects of other tracks and make them into something new and different.
Again these can be heard at www.junkpilerecordings.com.
