Here is our new single, released on 7 inch vinyl by those good folks at Fruits De Mer. The Zombies Care Of Cell 44 backed with Love Song With Flute by Caravan. To purchase a copy go to http://www.fruitsdemerrecords.com/
The Flaming Gnomes are a Hertfordshire based band that was hastily put together in early 2007 by local musicians to record a version of Pink Floyd's Arnold Layne as part of an EMI / Myspace / David Gilmour competition. The prize was a day's recording at Abbey Road studios and a logo designed by Hipgnosis main man Storm Thorgerson. Sadly we didn't win but we had great fun recreating a fine piece of music.
Roll the clocks forward to Spring 2008 and an enquiry by Keith Jones of the Fruits De Mer label as to whether we could recreate that sound and produce a single for his label neccesitated the reconvening of the band. We went away and mulled over numerous choices of songs to cover and finally came up with Care Of Cell 44 by The Zombies and Love Song With Flute by the legendary Canterbury band Caravan. These songs are due to see the light of day in February 2009 on the Fruits De Mer label in 7 inch vinyl format.
Although we were not lucky enough to have Storm Thorgerson design our logo, we were very fortunate to have the next best thing in former Hipgnosis man Jeff Cummins do it instead. Jeff will be designing the record sleeve too and along with some loudly coloured vinyl, should make for a very interesting product and a very collectable record as we are told only 300 are being pressed.
As for the future, The Gnomes are now putting plans together for the follow up single. A re-mix of Arnold Layne to the one featured on this site, along with a re-working of Daddy Where Did I Come From by The Nice. This single will hopefully serve as a tribute to three great musicians whom we have lost in recent times, Syd, Rick and Blinky.
Once again the focus will be on putting The Flaming Gnomes stamp on these songs as we have with the others, rather than just produce straight copies. We hope that listeners will find something new in our versions and hope that we haven't offended any purists. We love these songs, which is why we have chosen to record them and hope that we have paid due respect to them. I am sure your opinions will tell us whether we have succeeded in that aim.
Thanks for listening.
THE FLAMING GNOMES.
To celebrate the release of The Flaming Gnomes first single, former Hipgnosis design artist Jeff Cummins has produced a limited edition print of the front cover. Jeff as one of Storm Thorgerson's team has designed many iconic album covers, with Paul Mc Cartney, Moody Blues, Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd, UFO, Whitesnake and Rainbow being just a few of the bands that Jeff has worked with. Among his other work, Jeff has produced the Dr. Who artwork for the various Target book covers. Look in at http://www.jeffcummins.com to see more of his work. There will only be 300 prints available, numbered and signed by Jeff. Each print retails for £20 which includes postage and packing.
