About me: Canada’s only all-female 1920’s dance company was founded by Alana Hock, an expert and exuberant Tap and Jazz and Swing dancer who has been entertaining audiences since she was just a little girl. Alana is known for her sense of fun and was looking for some like-minded ladies to share it with when she created The Flappettes in 2004 to capture the verve and sass that only 1920’s Flapper-style dancing really possesses. Caitlin Wellman wanted in on the action and came on board as co-choreographer soon after adding her tremendous experience as a founding member of the award-winning, swing dancing troupe, Minnie’s Moochers.
The gals debuted their fabulousness at the 2004 Constance Margaret Christmas Ball where the crowd could not get enough. The popularity of the group simply soared from there and saw them perform all over town from Red Cabaret at Lula Lounge to charity auctions at the suitably vintage Liberty Grand. They were once again the show-stoppers of the evening at the 2005 CMC Ball and when the Ball moved to the newly renovated Palais Royale in 2006 the girls felt like they’d finally come home. They celebrated by bringing the roof down with their hip-swivels and shoulder shimmies. Ah, the fringe was a-flyin’ with exuberant Charleston steps and the high kicks were a highlight in fishnet stockings. The vintage vixens are going onward and upward with the creation of their own cabaret show for Fall 2007.
The key ingredients to making The Flappettes such a dynamic group are the unique personalities of each of its members. We have a belly-dancer, more than one swing dancer, several actors and a few tap dancers in the group. But what they all have in common is a love of the spirit of the 1920’s - when women bob-ed their hair, shortened their skirts, rolled down their stocking and danced in the streets. It was a time to celebrate smart, rebellious, dangerous, and sexy women. Each Flappette has her own way of expressing herself but what they have in common is that gleam in the eye that makes you wonder what they’re going to do next.
We perform regularly for corporate events in the GTA at locations like the Palais Royale and the Liberty Grand, and will make your next event the bees knees!!

"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
