The Fleas make sunny music for anyone who’s ever been stuck in the rain. Big bad world, little fleas.
Augmenting the traditional band line-up with glockenspiel, percussion, female backing and a twist of Latin in the groove, the West London five-piece produce a lovably homegrown pop sound that’s rooted in folk melody.
Piers (lead vocals, rhythm guitars) writes the band’s material, while Mannie (drums) is a born showman who brings Argentinean dynamism and flair to an otherwise very English affair. Bernadette (backing vocals, glockenspiel, percussion) colours the set with brio, gorgeous harmonies and a magical wooden box full of unexpected sounds. Switching between a lyrical guitar style and sonic experimentation, Nigel (lead guitars) acts as the band’s gatekeeper between understated intimacy and all-out stadium rock. Behind the scenes is Malcolm Neill, a tame artist who creates an alternative Flea world with drawings and animation work – a kind of sixth-form exercise book answer to Gorrillaz.
After locking together for six months in venues across London and recording a new EP, the band will be promoting the new release throughout 2010. The simple objective is radio airplay; the oxygen the band now needs to reach out to mainstream music lovers. While the group’s sound draws on draws on Latin, indie and rock influences, The Fleas are all about the songs. With this musical freedom the band waste no time in covering enormous emotional ground, all underpinned by Piers’ sharply English lyrical style. Live, the band’s loose-limbed and inclusive performances are warm and charismatic enough to win the room around wherever they play, from classic London dives to BBC radio sessions (Linda Serck’s The Session) and festivals such as Hamswell and Stansted Abbot.
Piers describes The Fleas as “the sort of band you’d want to share a packet of biscuits with”. More recently, though, the group have taken to handing out samples of their home–brewed “Fleabite” beer to their growing audience at gigs, much to the frustration of their London promoters.
Likened at various times to an ‘English Magic Numbers’, an ‘Indie Abba’ and even ‘The Manic Smiths’, The Fleas sound both fresh and familiar all at once. Catch them live and be forever bitten.

Pop will be joined by Professor Dave Bourne and the Medicine Show Band, Rob Zabrecky, Sophie Evans, Antonio Hoyos, Phil Van Tee and Pop's Candy Girls for a wonderful show of Old Time Music, magic, comedy and variety.
