   About The Flip Quartet

The Flip Quartet is a composition for four improvisers made by Polly Moller. In it, performers explore the four cardinal directions (north/east/south/west) and their medieval elemental correspondences (earth/air/fire/water) with objects, instruments, and text chosen by the improvisers following guidelines in the score.

The audience is seated inside the perimeter of the improvisation, and the performers circle around them, raising energy and creating elemental harmony in the space. The audience should watch out for the "flip" element in The Flip Quartet: the act of flipping over timers provides duration markers for the improvisation, and the players are encouraged to flip over anything they can during the performance.

The Flip Quartet was first performed on November 2, 2006 at the Luggage Store Gallery in San Francisco. Lucio Menegon, Suki O'Kane, Moe! Staiano, and Theresa Wong brought the piece to life on that day. A second performance took place on May 16, 2007 at 21 Grand in Oakland, CA -- featuring John Hanes, Suki O'Kane, Karen Stackpole, and Moe! Staiano.

I don't know which is more fun-- getting to be one of your audience members, or getting to play!
Cheers,

I had a dream about you last night. In it a new production of the piece had been arranged that was much bigger in scope. The venue was huge, like a warehouse or an airplane hangar, and the stations were very far apart. The performers had to get from station to station by walking, tightrope style, on long poles that were suspended by wires and ropes from the ceiling. It was very dangerous and dramatic. The crowd that attended was huge and my family was all there, including my dad. The performance started and was going really well, and for some reason I left the venue for a moment. When I got back, there was nothing happening and the crowd was leaving. I panicked and asked what had gone wrong. The performers revealed that my dad had stopped the performance and told everyone to go home. I took my dad aside into a small room nearby and we had a screaming fight about it. I woke up in the middle of the fight. It was awful.
