Simply, I am an indoor arena in Inglewood, California owned by a mega-Church, which uses me for its Sunday morning service.
But I became a landmark in large measure from the success of my sports teams and from the Hollywood celebrities often sighted in my audiences. From 1967 to 1999 I was the home of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Kings. Chamberlin, West, Baylor, Goodrich, Abdul-Jabbar, Magic, Worthy, Shaq, Gretzky, Dionne, Taylor, Rogie and Luuuuuuc Robitaille all called me Home. The Lakers won 6 NBA Titles here and who can forget the Miracle on Manchester. I've hosted NBA and NHL All-Star Games. Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star Game is one of the memories I will never forget.
And generations of Southern Californians know me from the countless events that I continue to host. Everything from tennis matches to rock concerts, boxing matches to ice shows, rodeos to political speeches.
It's probably why I came to be known as the "Fabulous" Forum.
I was named for and designed to evoke the Roman Forum. Part of my expense was the special accoustic walls Jack Kent-Cooke had installed which continue to keep me sounding great. I can hold up 18,000 for concerts, but no seat is more than 225 feet from the stage. More importantly for you, I have no luxury suites, which tend to mess with sound and, to me, divide people in a way that just isn't cool.
In 1988, Jerry Buss sold my naming rights and I was renamed the "Great Western Forum". The name stuck even after GW was bought by WaMu. I see people still call me the Great Western Forum on YouTube videos.
Forum Enterprises, Inc., who owns me and SMG, who manages me, finally removed the Great Western signs from me in 2006 and I'm thinking about doing something about the GW you see on my roof when you fly into LAX. So just call me the Forum.
I wonder if Myspace wants to buy my naming rights? The Myspace Forum, hmmmmm?
I continue to welcome awesome shows and community events, including concerts last year by such artists as Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I'm also available for film use. You've got to check me out in The Foo Fighters video for "All My Life."
I'm going to really celebrate during my 39th year, so make sure you check in on me to see what I'm up to!
Thank you sincerely for the add! I have archived many truly classic concerts you provided, such as getting in backstage (legitimately) to experience Jimi's last Forum concert and too many others to mention, so Google "Nosebleed Or Front Row, I Just Want To See The Show!" Set One and Set Two are free online! At least a dozen hard-core classic Fabulous Forum concerts are archived! Enjoy! Thanks FORUM, you were/are a big part of my life! Rock On!
