The use of "slick" racing tires, which are entirely smooth, allows a maximum of rubber in contact with the road, and therefore maximum acceleration of a powerful hot rod from a standing start. The "Four Slicks" in question are not only fans of hot-rodding, but are also rather slick individuals, and so the name fits them well. Charlie, Mark, Jon, Frankie, and Ben grew up together in Fresno, California, where they fielded a series of modified Willys in the late 1950's, with moderate success on the local drag racing circuit. With the intention of trying their luck on the dragstrip in Paris, Texas, they headed south on highway 99, but messed up their directions somewhere near Barstow and soon arrived (to their amazement) in Paris, France. It did not take them long to notice the charms of the lovely French chicks, and they decided to stay in their new country. They started a rock 'n' roll band to pass the time. They sing in English, their native language; naturally their lyrics are about cars, chicks, and booze. After a while, Frankie got a job in a small country town hot-rodding the farmers' tractors, so Ben stepped in to play bass. Life is good for them in France and their only regrets are the high price of gas and the difficulty of finding spare parts for their cars.
