   The Foxhead's Blurbs
About me:
Greetings from the oldest bar in Iowa City! Named after Foxhead brand beer, I first opened my doors in 1934, and am still rockin' out to this day. I love PBR and Powers, but I hate Anheuser-Busch products. King of Beers, my ass!

I am always looking for new visitors. Come inside me, and you'll never leave!

Quotes about the Foxhead:

"In a dark wooden booth at the Foxhead one night, the air blue with cigarette smoke and the clatter of pool balls, Frank confided to me that he had just gotten an advance for the novel he was then writing, $250,000. Suddenly I could see that he was no ordinary academic. We sat drinking with Joseph Brodsky another night, the jukebox playing and a bell at the bar being rung every time someone ordered a local beer called Dubuque Star. Brodsky had come to Iowa City to read. He was not the only Nobel laureate to do so. Derek Walcott came and Seamus Heaney, who read to a crowd that overflowed onto half the stage. While it did not rival Stockholm, the invitation to Iowa City was a distinction. Almost every week someone of interest arrived to read, and there were dinners with them beforehand."
--James Salter, "The Writing Teacher," The New York Times (May 8, 2005)

"I remember when the theater [Riverside Theatre] across the street was built. One time, someone came in from the theater and asked for a martini. The bartender said, 'I'm sorry, ma'am. This place is just shots and beer.'" ....

"I like that they don't make any drinks where the ingredients aren't in the name. It's a good policy," Workshop student Asali Solomon said. The bar has only one martini glass. ....

The jukebox, credited for much of the bar's popularity, seemingly has more Bob Dylan than the Bob Dylan oeuvre. It features jazz, old country, and folk, as well as local musicians, including Greg Brown and Dave Zollo. The Foxhead jukebox played only 45 rpm records until 1992. ....
The only changes made at the Foxhead through the decades have been to occasionally paint over the extensive bathroom graffiti, which by all accounts is surprisingly bad for a writers' bar. ....

"Sometimes people will come in here and try to be pretentious, and they'll get knocked down." ....
--Dane Roberts, "A lean, well-nighted place," The Daily Iowan (April 24, 2003).

The Fox Head is awesome, and I miss it dearly. One time in 2003 I almost got roughed-up there by some guys for playing "Young American" by David Bowie three times in a row on the jukebox.
