The Italian Futurists, Dada, Surrealism, Fluxus, The Situationist International, Comte de Lautreamont, sound poetry, text-sound composition, broken software, John Cage, Deleuze and Guattari, belt sanders, pre-dotcom-era UNIX hacking, feedback, static, 1970s occult magazines and maybe even music.
Basically, the only extreme noise/free improv/sound/performance art/Dada/jam band in San Jose history (1991-1999). Throbbing Gristle meets the Happy Flowers meets Foghorn Leghorn on PCP.
Formed as a clandestine fraternity of the absurd when we were music students at San Jose State University in late 1991, the Gas Chamber Orchestra played about 70 gigs, mostly in San Jose and around the South Bay with occasional benders in SF, LA and Vegas. Since many of the other music students were members of an established fraternity called Mu Phi Epsilon, we started our own brotherhood, The Gas Chamber Orchestra, except we just had the frat party on stage instead of in someone's house.
Roll call: Mike passed away in 1996. Ryan went on to get his Ph.D. and now works at Digidesign. Mark is now a world renowned composer and sound engineer. Gary became a journalist. Talk about rising from the ashes.
The moniker was just a play on words, with "Gas Chamber" being the form of the death penalty in California at that time, and "Chamber Orchestra" being a small orchestra where each individual plays his or her own part. Our music was a twisted combination of both. Unfortunately, folks everywhere wrongly interpreted the moniker as a Nazi reference, which it honestly wasn't, and although we were wholly sympathetic to those offended, we decided out of belligerent grandiosity and defiance to not change the name. Thus, the project went absolutely nowhere fast, but we did a lot of interesting gigs, including live internet broadcasts circa 1995, before that was the norm. Hours of live recordings and a wealth of documentation exists, so someday...

Schloss Tegal has always given us more of a intense look into controversial subjects. With a back catalogue of CDs covering such things as UFOs, electronic voice phenomenon, and human resource exploitation and more. Now a completely new CD for 2008, Schloss Tegal's most intense work to date. An allegory made from power electronics, meat processing and death machines. Electro-acoustic realism with such sound sources as bone saw, mallet, hand saw, bone chopping and animal death chambers expressing such 20th century subjects as modern cannibalism, interrogative torture, the porn industry, elements of demons, werewolves, and more. Be warned the animal electronic death chambers resemble black interrogation torture sites or Guantanamo Bay Cuba prison camps on this CD, and real sounds were recorded at the slaughterhouse in Pilzen, Czech Republic and at the Walk-in Brooklyn New York. What the myth is? Is up to you to decide. The cruelty of man by his rulers or his own nature? This is a dark hyper-realistic power electronic work of psychogenic industrial electronics definately not for the weak at heart with Intense sound that you can feel through your entire body. Comes in a clear jewel case, full color photo-realistic cover and 4-page booklet. This CD is a Limited Edition and a step into a new direction away from dark ambient for Schloss Tegal into hyper-realistic psychogenic music.
