Who is Gian?
Gian is an Australian based Latin/Flamenco guitarist & singer/songwriter. Born to an Italian father and German mother, he was brought up on an fusion of musical and cultural styles from Flamenco, R&B, Soul, Pop, through to Latin and world music, all strongly reflected in his music.
One of today’s few unique artists to equally blend songs and instrumental tracks, Gian’s 14yrs of study and public performance in both Australia and Europe, has not only gained him respect from his peers but has also been creating attention with a list of credits and awards to his name, most recently as best artist at the ABC awards, best male vocalist (ABC Awards), Broadcasters choice ( ABC awards), APRA songwriter of the year, Best Instrumental Artist In Australia at the 2004 MusicOz Awards, Top 5 in both R&B and World Music Categories, and one of his tracks from his latest album “All about the music” has been included on a Petrol records EP which became the 11th most downloaded instrumental track on the US I tunes charts.
Gian’s music and acclaim has culminated in securing a major recording and publishing deal with ABC Music Australia with Australian distribution through Warner Music where his album is planned for release in September 2007 Australia wide. Gian has recently worked with Grammy nominated songwriter/producer Paul Pederson (The Corrs, Prince, and George Benson). After this collaboration Gian is heading to the US to continue song writing and then will be heading off to complete a European tour in 2008.
His vibrant and very musical performance’s with his amazing world class musicians bring Gian’s music to life where music of the world combines to form a contemporary sound that is full of colour, passion and musicality fascinating audiences when ever its performed.
"Music changes the world, without music the world would be a pretty sad place... it's just an honour to be part of it" - Gian, 2005 winner of the 'ABC Music Best Artist' Award.
Flamenco guitarist Gian took out the 2005 'ABC Music Artist of The Year' Award at last week's fourth annual 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards, held Thursday October 13th at the Civic Theatre Newcastle. The prize, provided by ABC Music, entitles Gian to a six track live recording at ABC Studios Ultimo, a professional photo shoot and biography.
"Winning is an absolute honour, as I know of the amount of talent in Newcastle.... I combined music I love (world music) along with contemporary music and made something I loved, in the hope it would affect other people, which it obviously has - it's absolutely fantastic", said Gian.
In addition to winning the overall prize, Gian also walked away with 'Best Male Vocals' for his Adult Contemporary entry 'Over', 'Hunter Broadcasters' Choice' for his Pop entry 'Just Believe', as well as being the inaugural recipient of the 'ABC Music Publishing & APRA Songwriters and Composers Recognition Award' after judges heard the previous mentioned entries along with his instrumental track 'Tambor'.
Gian has proved the theory that you have to be in it to win it. Those who attended the Awards in 2004 may remember Gian's performance with his band 'The Heat' - filled with salsa dancers, colour and sounds of Pop, RNB and flamenco. He walked away from that year without an award, however 2005 has seen him re-enter and go on to collect the most awards one artist has received in any one year.
