The Gifthorse
From The Floor Up EP – Poison City 8/10
Brisbane outfit The Gifthorse have pumped this EP out in quite a short space of time, with an album hitting the shelves mere months ago. The songs here still sit in the same basket as their prior material, though the addition of time has added a dynamic that some of the prior album tracks were lacking. Recording with Sam Johnson, a man well versed in this gritty style of punk having worked with the likes of A Death In The Family & Coue Method, really lends From The Floor Up more of a natural, organic feel that really benefits the sounds on offer. With the growth in song writing skills and a nifty cover of Spy Vs Spy’s “Don’t Tear It Down”, this EP is exactly the sort of progression you want to see in a local act.

WHO GOES THERE?
Brisbanes preeminent heartfelt punk rock quintet are back with another installment of homegrown awesomeness.
HOW GOES IT?
Deciding on a shorter EP offering after their well received full length, The Gifthorse have effectively callibrated their influences with their own inner monologue to focus on writing honest, introspective songs cradled by an attention to warm tones and hypnotic melodies. Its this mature outlook on melodic punk rock which sets FROM THE FLOOR UP apart and above your run of the mill punk release, and leaves you wanting more after the band finish with a cracking spy vs. spy cover.

self titled album on POISON CITY RECORDS
Out of Brisbane comes the gravel throated melodic punk sounds of The Gift Horse, a sound that proved quite popular underground back in the 90's and has been kept breathing here in Australia mainly by bands from Melbourne over the years. 10 tracks, each different enough from the last to keep you interested throughout, some more hard hitting than others, but each loaded with enough hooks to charm you into it. It won't be for everyone, but if you dig bands like A Death In The Family, Lead Sketch Union, Samiam and the likes, then you'll do your ears a favor by taking a listen.

I’m a bit biased when it comes to this band. I’ve seen them around Brisbane quite a few times and knew this was gonna be one hell of a record well prior to its release. For those unfamiliar with these local dudes, The Gifthorse play a driving, melodic brand of punk rock drawing influence from Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker and their ilk. They also put a personal touch to it in the form of vocalist Shane Collins’ endearing drawl and one of the best drum sounds in Brisbane, courtesy of former Razorhurst skinsman Wade Larkin. The main thing that gets me about this disc is just how goddamn catchy it is. These guys know how to write riffs and songs that will stick in your head for days. Also, of honourable mention is the guitar tone, which barely has any gain at all. In most cases this would highlight the band’s mistakes, but here it helps show just how tight they are. This is one of the best local punk releases in quite some time and definitely worth seeking out (Rob S).
Now most they are 10 tune entering debut albums of The Gifthorse which is one of the bands which have been observed! And this work is produced the satisfaction which does not betray this expectation and with we have become. Same Australian Caustic Soda~Blueline Medic of course thing, floats the pathos which makes Hooton 3 Car and Broccoli think etc, to include the vocal, it seems like Farside and privately considerably the pot is intense tannin [merodeitsuku]. You feel longing to place ?, today [merodeitsuku] it seems simultaneously, being, the [me] [chi] [ya] oral [ya] parenthesis it is good!

GIFT HORSE, THE:
Self-titled: CD
Some real ‘90s-sounding emo, the way it sounded before it became the glam metal of this decade. Fans of Mineral, Braid, or any Crank! Records compilation would love this band. This is extremely well done and I have something of a soft spot for this sound. It is nice to hear some emo style stuff that doesn’t totally suck for a change. –Mike Frame (RAZORCAKE)
