About me:

I am a dark fantasy author. My debut novel, Tourniquet: Tales From The Renegade City is published by Immanion Press.

Set in grand-gothika Renegade City, Tourniquet is a tale of dead messiahs, brutal loss, unrequited love, and blazing motorbikes. It incorporates all that is flesh and blood me; the rock scene, alternative lifestyles, cyber-culture, bikes, hot rods, hard liquor, dark desires, and lurid living.

I’m passionate about all aspects of transgression, from freedom of creativity to gender bending to an individual’s right to dress as wildly as they see fit. I like to think I’m well placed to connect with my readers, having a lazy-hazy attitude to maturity, an eclectic dress sense, and a healthy dollop of vanity on the side.

TOURNIQUET IS OFFICIALLY RELEASED 21ST MAY 2007.

AVAILABLE FROM AMAZON, IMMANION PRESS, KIMLAKIN-SMITH.COM AND INDEPENDENT RETAIL OUTLETS.

Tourniquet: Tales From The Renegade City

by Kim Lakin-Smith

Renegade City. Futurist gothika. Mecca of the damned. A world where über rock-band, Origin, is deified and the world's dark sub-cultures coexist under the umbrella faith of Belief. Roses, the great gothic messiah is dead, the tribes are in turmoil, and home-bred rebels, the drifters, are quickly becoming a law unto themselves.

The last thing that Druid, Origin's drummer and reclusive high lord of the Drathcor, wants to do is hunt his brother's killer - especially since he's not so sure of foul play, or even the purity of his motives. But against all of his expectations, he is soon embroiled with the underbelly of dissension, dirty politics, and a non-believer as jaded with Renegade's great and secret show as he is. Street punk, Jezebel, is also on a quest to track her brother, a Skinwalker. Trouble is, they're a violent breed.

In league with a strawberry switchblade assortment of freaks, geeks, and greebos, this living god and living dead girl find their paths interlinked for a series of cataclysmic events that will tear at mutual bonds, unmask a fresh face of hate, and forge new breeds of magick...

Hi Kim. If that was the book's aim then mission accomplished - i felt that the introspective moments for the characters were among the book's strongest, my favourite being the closing pages with Jezebel in the hospital.
Thanks for the kind words on my artwork, very much appreciated :) On the graphic novel side i have a specially created short story that i've just finished and will be uploading to my site very shortly as part of an overhaul. In the meantime i'm more than happy to send you a copy of each of my self published magazines (both of them, lol) either by post or via our mutual acquaintence, Mr NK Bond. Whichever you'd prefer :) x

Lol, ah the confusion thing. I'll try and get this in a nutshell (and all this is simply my opinion of course). I really didn't think that i'd like Tourniquet. Pure 1st impression stuff, it's very obvious 'goth-centric' packaging and blurb made me wary as much of the stuff aimed at our market of late is seriously below par (i'll take my hatred of Underworld to the grave, grrr) and i'm familiar enough with Nottingham and it's haunts for the concept to raise a 'Hmmm...'
Then, of course, i read it.
Turns out that, when explained in the context of the novel, not only does your central idea make sense, but if someone started Renegade City tomorrow i'd be there Thursday. Turns out that the book is populated by interesting, human characters and a satisfying mix of extraordinary and personal obstacles for them to overcome. Turns out that when i got to the end of the book i felt at a loss cause i really wanted to stay in this world with these people. It really is a pleasure to read, wonderfully realised and executed and made me feel very glad to have been very wrong :)
Hmmm, must've been a coconut shell.
Thanks for letting me litter your myspace page with my opinion,
take care x
Kev

Hi Kim, thanks for the add :) Hope everything's good with you. Quick question, bearing in mind that Tourniquet is not long released, but when can we expect the follow up? I've grown to like your little troupe of misfits :) Take care
