The story of Girl George and The Arizona Star! I mainly watched this for the story of Girl George, but the vast array of other characters in the film are interesting as hell also! Girl George would start out in the place that she would make full circle to and wind back at even up to this day, the San Francisco Bay Area. She left home early and through some fake id's got into the bars and things in the area in the early 60's, so she witnessed the early scene there with all the beat poets and musicians, people like Allen Ginsburg and the like. She also did some time as a topless dancer for a brief period. Girl George first realized her true calling after strumming a few chords playing songs like "Mr. Tambourine Man" at open mics in such places as the "Coffee Gallery" in SF. After performing for a while, Girl George noticed a glamourous over the top Marilyn Monroe on acid type character that she would take under her wing who would perform with her for about 5 years. Girl George admits that Star was the total opposite of her, but the contrast worked nicely and she was interesting. Kris Kristofferson (actor/musician you probably have all seen) would take them under his wing and have them play around town. From there, they went on to Nashville where they continued a wild existence including sneaking into the Grammy's, screaming and dancing on tables, and crashing many parties. Girl George would start writing her own songs here. She returned to San Francisco in the early 70's and even performed for a while with Mike Wilhelm who played in the amazing 60's group The Charlatans, who had started the whole 60's Haight Ashbury psychedelic scene in San Francisco. Created in 2004, the documentary is well put together and tells the whole story with some great, vintage video clips and archival photos etc.. A large cast of characters in the film that are interesting and way fun to watch. The clips of Girl George's TV show (yes she even had a TV show for some time) are priceless; Wavy Gravy, the amazing BLUE CHEER plays a great performance and you see Dickie Peterson showing some fondness for Girl George in his own way, seems like he's flirting to me! Also featured is footage of the "Love-Ins" that Girl George hosted in LA in the park from 1985-1995, the first Sunday of every April where people would gather together and play music and just have a fun time all around. Great documentary with plenty of live music clips, news clips, interviews and more. Girl George, with her attitude and passion for performing could be considered one of the first true punk rock females in San Francisco, she really didn't give a fuck, did her own thing and is STILL doing it today at the Long Haul in Berkeley. One would not right off think of the Berk. Irish Pub, STARRY PLOUGH, as a vestige of PUNK. But think about it, what is punk ,if not the ultimate musical form of free expression and freedom of speech. With revolution in the air again, you wonder why you didn't notice it before. Look up there, on the walls, next to the ceiling, there's posters of every revolution that's come down the pike since before you were born. yes LOOK around, some of the posters may be down for a while (their remodeling) for their big 35 anniversary, celebration in Sept. of 2007. Lots of BIG PUNK BANDS have played here, but that's not the point, Go to the STARRY PLOUGH any Tue night and you'll find the most amazing thing your eyes will ever behold. To cut to the chase, in one word (or is that two) GIRL GEORGE, a veteran of the San Francisco premiere PUNK CLUB "THE FAB MAB" in the 70's then onto the legendary L.A.PUNKDOMS AL'S BAR "NO TALENT NIGHT" SHE WAS THE QUEEN OF THE UNDERGROUND. (check the videos of al's bar 1990 on her web site www.myspace.com/thegirlgeorge.html) THERE'S NO ONE LIKE GIRL GEORGE. She also played the ANTI CLUB, THE CENTRAL JAM, and ran the open mic at the CATHAY DE GRAND. Boy talk about someone that's been around. She played the fillmore NEW YEARS EVE '69 going into '70..if you watch the HISTORY Ch. on TV you'll see her in "HISTORY OF THE HELLS ANGELS" Yeah that's her, the blond sitting at the table with Sonny, on the Bass lake run (the one Hunter S. Thompson wrote about) and that's not the only time her path crossed with GONZO, in Nashville in the '70's she gave him a lift to the SMOKEY MOUNTAINS, for a story he had to do. NO GIRL GEORGE was not at WOODSTOCK, she was at ALTAMONT right up in front of the stage (how punk is that?) She went to Nashville in '71 with her act "GEORGE AND THE ARIZONA STAR" flew there on a bum check, crashed the GRAMMIES and the COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS. Played the Tenn. State Men's Penitentiary, with outlaws DAVID ALLEN COE, AND FARON YOUNG....
KRISTOFFERSON would bring JOAN BAEZ and JERRY JEFF WALKER to the RED DOG SALOON to see them play, When they needed money, they made up tickets for a play called "THE LOBOTOMY", sold tickets by the hundreds, then finally got around to writing the dam thing with ZILCH FLETCHER a wk. before they put it on at the RED DOG SALOON (or was the place called "UP YOURS" by that time) they Did the play a second time when they needed money again, (and by popular demand)...This time it was video taped and shown at a later date at the "EXIT IN" as "THE LOBOTOMY THE MOVIE".. All this is captured in a documentary movie made about them in 2004.You can find this too on one of GIRL GEORGE'S 3 WEB SITES, they're all linked together (follow the yellow brick road) "GEORGE & THE ARIZONA STAR TOURED WITH DR.HOOK, CHUCK BERRY ,STEVIE WONDER IN THE 1970,Came back to SF in 1975,ran the COFFEE GALLERY OPEN MIC for a year. To those who may not have heard, our dear brother Dickie Peterson (OF BLUE CHEER) has passed away from what I understand was liver cancer or complication there of. He left us 10-12-09 in Germany at at 5:00am.
Dickie will be greatly missed by many. He told me that he didn't have "fans" he had "friends" and I know he valued each and every one of them. From the beginning Dickie chose his own path through this journey we call life paving the way for those who dared to follow. Dickie was not just a pioneer in Rock & Roll music but also a LEADER that will continue to guide musicians and music lovers for ever.
I know he wouldn't want us to be sad and I know he's up there turning the Angel's harps up to "11"! Blow the Golden Gates off the joint Dickie!

George your a folk hero, A living legend. An inspiration to countless success stories. Like me who inspired countless bozo's but never cashed in myself. we deserve a break, we payed endless dues inspired countless acts. But wait a minute maybe there's more than meets the eye. Maybe its truly not about the money.
this is to be real not based on b.s. people that lived it not just a distant dream. Not Unlike so many stories these are stories that are one of a kind, like the writers themselves. 33 years ago there was this group of musicians covering and writing songs. But these people were not needed. The world already had its hero's male and female alike.
It didn't need anymore. or did it? Like I said these people inspired countless acts directly and or indirectly if you know what I'm trying to say. If you know your music history, you will see how it all branches off from just a few heavy branches. I'm going over my very very bad memory trying to remember the people and they're name. But I feel with the help of Girl George, who her self is one of the living legions of that very important era
