With an innovative sound that coupled hardcore punk with heartfelt blues, The Gits were poised to break into the mainstream, but they would never achieve the success of Seattle contemporaries Nirvana because on July 7, 1993 singer Mia Zapata was found murdered –the apparent victim of a rape/homicide.
It was a crime unsolved when director Kerri O'Kane began shooting her debut feature THE GITS. In the interim, however, fans, friends and celebrities like Joan Jett and Nirvana helped raise money to reopen what had become a cold case file. Mia's death had reverberated throughout the music community, and remarkably Mia's killer was brought to justice as the cameras rolled.
"THE GITS is a new motion-picture hybrid," observes Liberation chairman Jay Boberg. "On the surface it's a documentary about a great rock n roll band at an incredible time in music history, but it's also a murder mystery. It's got joy and poignancy -it's just extraordinary."
THE GITS documents the band's journey from its inception to the tragedy that cut its promise short. The film contextualizes The Gits as part of a loyal and creative community, and explores how they were transformed through the experience of having been a unique and explosive underground rock group for seven years. It will also explore how members and friends of the group were irrevocably altered by Mia Zapata's life and death. Efforts made by this same community in search of Mia's killer, and its response to the recent arrest of a suspect in the crime will also be detailed. The film features the members of The Gits as well as friends and peers Joan Jett, Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill/Le Tigre), and Valerie Agnew and Selene Vigil (7 Year Bitch).
THE GITS is a celebration of a rock band that touched many lives. Driven by pure conviction and the voice of Mia Zapata, The Gits stood apart from many groups of their time.
THE GITS will begin its theatrical run JULY 4th, 2008 in select cities. The film will be released worldwide on DVD July 8th by Liberation Entertainment.

Thank you for making such an amazing documentary! I knew about Mia's horrible death back when I was 14. My friend Jenny Lin was murdered in Castro Valley in 1994. I became angry and didn't really understand how someone could murder such an innocent person. There were no answers and the case went cold for years.
I am thrilled Mia's murderer has been brought to justice but I know everyone feels his punishment will never be enough for an amazing life he took away from Mia's family, friends and us her fans.
I listen to The Gits music all the time. I have for years! Mia's words and the music you all created has gotten me through a lot of hard times in my life. It has inspired me to draw, paint, sculpt and be who I am and that everyday is never a guarantee.
So I raise my beer high in the air and scream loud enough for everyone to hear Viva Zapata!

I loved the movie, got to catch the screening in Oakland, and I absolutely loved it. I can't wait to buy it. Viva Zapata! I never got to see her live, but I sure wish I could have. She is absolutley beautiful.
