to that amazing rock and roll cd we were just discussing. Hailing from
Trieste-Venezia-Treviso, Italy is Gonzales. These guys have delivered
the best new rock solid rock and roll album of 2009 with "CheckMate."
Their freshman release on Italy's Chorus Of One Records is proving fast
to be a cd that will stand the test of time for them and their record
label.
With ass kicking songs like "Kiss The Sky", "CheckMate"
and "Fallen" you get all the balls to the wall rock and roll that
you're looking for, plus they even give you a solid fast paced cover of
Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire" and it makes you just wanna pump your fist
in the air and sing along.
The members of Gonzales come from a
musically diverse backgrounds with history in rock and roll, punk,
hardcore and even grind bands. With all that experience, this band has
taken the future of rock and roll to a new level, blending the 60's
& 70's rock sound with modern day punk. Rock and roll is not
something most people attempt to play these days, and the ones who do
veer far off track and go in a whole different direction. Gonzales, on
the other hand, with their diverse history in music, bring to the table
something that you can love even if you never really tend to venture
out of genres you normally stick to. You can still respect this band
and love the music, and that's an awesome feat.
These guys have
worked long and hard and they deserve all the thanks and help you can
throw at them. So pick up the cd, or you can even pick it up in 12"
vinyl.

there, stop and grab a shirt before they are gone. This band is here to
stay and party, and they are definitely going to keep pumping out the
good TurboRock we love and you shouldn't miss out on this gem to the
music world.

"NO FRONT TEETH" (webzine - UK)
"Some seriously heavy rockin’ from this Italian band - there’s definitely an element of ‘Appetite For Destruction’ era GUNS N’ ROSES and a touch of that vulgar TURBONEGRO, HELLACOPTERS rock ‘n’ roll too but merged with some balls-out garage punk ala NEW BOMB TURKS and some straight up ‘70’s punk rock too. The sound is solid as hell – really full-on and they really blend the powerful rock with the more stripped-down punk really successfully and that’s not easy to do, often bands that attempt this blend get too carried away with the rock side of things which buries the punk attitude and rawness deeply under the rock guitars and production but GONZALES makes sure that doesn’t happen. This is way more rocky than anything I’d usually listen to but, for my tastes, this is the best I’ve heard this stuff done – I can get with this and that’s mainly because the punk rock is so present which is a huge must for me. An interesting record for sure."

"Il sottobosco fumoso, popolato da esseri rivestiti di jeans e cuoio, attendeva con trepidazione il ritorno degli italiani Gonzales.
Ora che le luci dei riflettori puntati sull’hard-rock scandinavo si
sono affievolite, è giunto il momento in cui i nostri devono scagliare
un deciso affondo nel ventre di questo genere troppo snobbato dalla
spocchiosa scena underground. Il primo album uscito nel 2005, “Hell Drive“, mi aveva fortemente inebriato, mentre il 7” split con i Drop The I era stato una mezza delusione, per via di una batteria non abbastanza incisiva e precisa.
“Checkmate”,invece, uscito alla fine del 2008, ridisegna le coordinate del loro suono, ora più fiorito e con pantaloni sempre più a zampa. Il “vero” cuore dell’album inizia a battere con l’ottima “Kiss the sky”, e da lì in poi il groove (is in the air) ti afferra con calda violenza.
E’ un tripudio di chitarre, ora veramente e sinceramente rock, unite ad un basso ed una batteria grasse, finalmente registrate con la potenza che meritano. “Heaven gone wrong” è uno degli apici di questo disco, emozionante maelstrom di tamburelli, riff capricornuti, cori d’arena ed un cantato impeccabile. Le tracce che prediligo sono quelle meno up-tempo – anche se la cover di “Ring Of Fire” dal vivo dev’essere piuttosto bollente – ma l’intero “Checkmate” cresce ad ogni ascolto. E non sarebbe potuto essere altrimenti, tenendo conto del grande amore che i quattro ragazzi nutrono per il rock più sanguigno.
I fans dei Thin Lizzy, tanto quanto quelli dei Misfits - ascoltate i cori di “Fiesta” e capirete -, sono pregati di concedersi mezz’ora di sauna hard-rock in compagnia dei Gonzales. (by VOM)"
