Members of The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit drew together out of the sheer necessity to create great music. Comprised of former members of The Puffin’ Billies, Oakdale’s now defunct winner of the Modesto Area Music Association’s 2002 award for best country/bluegrass band, Built Like Alaska’s (2002 MAMA: Best Alternative Rock Band) former lead guitarist, and Grandaddy’s (indie-rock pioneers) former drummer, The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit blends superb musicianship with a prolific body of creative songwriting.
In the months following the disbanding of The Puffin’ Billies, Will Taylor (vocals, tenor guitar, harmonica) and Chris Doud (vocals, guitars) devised a challenging scheme that would result in the composition of many fine original songs: THE 52 WEEKS CLUB . Members of the club would take a common word, phrase, or theme each week and use it as the foundation of a new song. Weeks with such themes as “Lazy Train,” “Off the Cuff,” “Johnny Law,” and “Shovel” inspired several possible interpretations to any songwriter interested in taking up the challenge. The new songs would debut on Wednesday nights at the Cow Track Lounge in Oakdale, CA, where club members and other Oakdale alt-country, folk, and bluegrass pickers religiously converge. The Cow Track Road Show often took its Wednesday night regulars outside of Oakdale to showcase new songs, old songs, or favorite songs. With so much budding creativity, however, starting a new band became the next logical step, a band focused on crafting fine original music. The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit has been playing together since early spring of 2005.
Will Taylor and Chris Doud co-front the band, which includes Taylor Webster (bass, vocals), Guido Provalone (pedal steel guitar, electric guitar, banjo), and Aaron Burtch (drums). The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit takes their eclectic Americana style to any folks anxious to have a good time and hear some good, honest music.
