The Gray Kid‘s trunk-wobbling anthems and ballads of love and lust have established him as one of independent music’s most dynamic and entertaining performers. Having spent 2008 developing the band SPIRIT ANIMAL with top-call musicians who have recorded and toured with Ben Harper, The Pharcyde and others, Gray is poised to enter a new realm of psychedelic soul and dance music that recalls the intensity, grit and eccentricity of The Doors, LCD Soundsystem and Parliament Funkadelic.
First out this Spring, he'll deal a cross-genre blow in the form of 2009's “FREE MUSIC!!!,” a rap and soul EP rich in musicality, hooks and wit. The record, mixed by Danny Kalb (Beck, Neon Neon, Jack Johnson, Rilo Kiley) and produced by Gray and L.A. analog guru Computer Jay, features 18 musicians and six songs, including fan favorites “EH MAN,” “Oh My,” and “Soothsayer,” for which there is a racy, film noir music video. “FREE MUSIC!!!,” to be released digitally through Gray's website (graykid.com), is the inspiration for a broad effort to offer all of the music he has written and produced, dating back to 2001, in one place for one cost: $0.00.
Gray has received high praise from various media outlets (Yahoo, Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Interview), shared the stage with leaders of the new school pack (M.I.A., Cool Kids), and licensed a track to NBC’s 30 Rock, all without a record deal.
His strong foundation rests partially on the three albums he has self-produced, recorded and released, partially on his stomping, crooning live shows, and partially on the online presence of his hot-button art collective, People-Food(United Talent Agency/BenderSpink). The collective is responsible for 3 million video views and enables Gray to accompany his musical efforts with high-end visual components and alternative multimedia at every turn. This spring he is scheduled to release an MSN commercial, a new music video, and his second Internet cooking segment with VIMBY.com.
In 2009, Spirit Animal will complete its debut full-length, "The Cost of Living." This release will be preceded by an EP of cover songs, "Covers I," which reinvents notable numbers from Beirut, Ginuwine, Alphaville and Sheila Hylton.
Hey it's your buddy Mike Falzone (no one says buddy anymore). I just wanted to give you my record "Fun with Honesty" for free. I'd also like to give you an obnoxiously long hug, but due to our proximity, I don't think that can happen today. Please give it a listen. If I'm ever famous one day you can say, "Hey! That loser gave me his album for free!"... then you can laugh at everyone who paid $20 for it at Best Buy! Have a great day!
Cop the Killa Beast EP!! OUT NOW! The Killa Beast EP is packed with 17 jams which includes such hits as "Take It Slow", "Glorious", & "DoYu". Enjoy bonus tracks from hip hop group MadeMen (Bizzle Boy Affiliates).
I've finally made it to California, and i'd love to see you. Nothing too formal, you know. Something like you onstage and me in the crowd. Hit me back if you think it's ever possible that this arrangement could be made.
I watched your tour documentary and Jenny O. looks very familiar for some reason. She probably just looks like someone I once knew or maybe just has "one of those faces." But I thought I'd check with you to make sure that she never lived in Austin or Houston so that I can confirm that I AM in fact crazy.
Listen Steve, I met you in Montreal this one time (with my sister, whose name is Kayla) and I am in L.A. for the weekend, and I'm coming to your show, and I just want to express how FUCKING PSYCHED I AM TO BE ABLE TO SEE YOU IN CONCERT AGAIN. Seriously, you've never stopped delivering the great music. Fuck. Eff. In the good way.
