The Great Escape is a Maltese indie alternative rock band formed in 2007 in Malta. The band consists of Abygail Martini, Emerson, Karl Formosa and Daniel Buttigieg.
The band stemmed around 2007 when guitar/keyboard player Emerson Vella and drummer Daniel Buttigieg attended the UOM Junior College. Even though both were involved in the local music scene they did not know each other. From mutual friendships they eventually met in the College study areas, and to their surprise learnt that they had the same taste for 80s hard rock and power metal at the time, and shared a great Black Sabbath/classic rock influence. With the local scene being mostly dominated by death and black metal and the occasional punk rock bands they decided to form a classic rock band with obvious Sabbath/Led Zep/KISS roots.
Thus Daniel quit his former band to make space in his garage for this new attempt. However, not all was thrown out in favour of a new band: Karl, the bassist joined the duo on a jamming session and the trio clicked immediately during the first few jams. Settling for a power trio for some time with Emerson handling both guitar and vocals and covering material from Black Sabbath, W.A.S.P. and T-Rex, the need was felt for a dedicated vocalist to join the band and enable Emerson to concentrate solely on guitars. The most obvious candidate was Emerson's girlfriend, who having sang in another band Emerson played guitar and keyboards, was looking for another band to join since the group had since split up.
A year later, rehearsing both original material and covers, the band started to dwindle slowly. Each member having his or her own other commitments the band was eventually almost pushed aside were it not for guitarist Robert Carbonaro, who had played with both Aby and Emerson in their older band. Robert called up Emerson with a proposal to write some material with him and eventually enter a TV rock battle of the bands with the prize of both local promotion and a studio recording. Having never played broken out live, the band saw this as the perfect occasion for their first public performance, which incidentally was to be broadcast on National TV. In two weeks some new material was written collectively by the now five-piece band to reflect its newest direction. The song "Run Away" was then entered for the competition and was played live on TV. To the surprise of the band the song placed 5th by the local judges but scored a whopping 1st place with the public televoting!
Sadly though, the prize was awarded to the band scoring first with the judges. However the five-piece was not disheartened, and with the 1st place in mind they returned to their practice room every week, stronger as a band than ever before.
Robert, having his little wish come true and play a moderate-key performance on TV eventually amicably quit the band to concentrate on his studies. He'll hopefully be on board again soon!
The band, continuing on its musical journey, has organised a private gig and party for Aby's 21st birthday in April 08 (just a few weeks ago). Following the indie vein of doing things, the band (and thankfully, Mark from Zizza Ensemble/Totema gave us a hand! thanks man!) took care of everything: live sound, flyers, promotion, public transport logistics, site preparation and even organised a bottle party for before and after the gig! It turned out to be a success: a drunk guitar player, a jam with audience members, a great deal of cheering and stoned air guitar during our rendition of Detroit Rock City and a load of happy faces! Surely an occasion to be remembered and to be repeated!!
The band is now dealing with both rehearsals and studies, working hard on writing and learning new material, working on a small little secret something and thinking of interesting places where to hold its future gigs.
