On Sunday 18th March 2007, the band “The Green Shamrock” performed their debut concert at the Evangelical Church in Neckarsteinach (Hessen/Germany). The band, Katharina Körber (vocals, Bodhràn, Tin Whistle, percussion), Franziska Langendörfer (violin/fiddle) and Karl-Heinz Ehret (guitar, vocals) played Irish Folk and more. Loving Irish music, they named themselves after the green shamrock, the unofficial national symbol of Ireland......................................... Musical biography of Katharina Körber: Singer, Bodhràn, Tin Whistle - Katharina started her musical journey when she was in Primary School by learning the recorder and attending music school. Before long she was taking piano lessons and also taught herself to play the accordion. Very interested in singing, she joined the school choir and later moved on to another choir in her home town. She also acted in a children’s musical and played the piano in a children’s choir. Here she got to know the guitarist Karl-Heinz Ehret, who had already proven his musical ability in the band “Wolkenflug”. Katharina joined “Wolkenflug” and has been an active member of the group ever since - besides majoring in art history and German language and literature. She made many solo performances at concerts, until she felt the desire to play Irish music. In Karl-Heinz she found someone like-minded, and so the idea of a new Irish Folk band was born. To enrich the future Irish sound, Katharina taught herself the Tin Whistle and the Bodhràn. Furthermore she travelled twice to Ireland to gain first hand impressions of traditional Irish music and the associated instruments. Their first gig together as a band they played in summer 2006 at the ‘Kirchenstraßenfest’ in Neckarsteinach............................................................................ Musical biography of Franziska Langendörfer: violin/fiddle - Franziska started learning the fiddle/violin at the age of 8. Already provided with a good musical grounding by her musical parents and her pre-school education, she composed her own first little pieces of music at the age of 6. In the beginning she wanted to become a professional musician and so she practised the violin intensely with the “Russian School”. But practising was not so easy for her, so she decided it would be a hobby and played in orchestras and chamber music groups for some time. On a trip with her orchestra Franziska made her first acquaintance with Irish fiddle music and she liked it immediately. After studying Musical Education, Franziska studied Psychology and did her doctorate. During this time she played the violin only rarely at family celebrations. In May 2006, at one of these anniversaries, she met the guitarist Karl-Heinz Ehret, who was also playing at the family celebration. He asked her if she was interested in joining an Irish Folk band he was founding. Franziska liked the idea very much as she already wanted to play more music again. So they hooked up a little bit later with Katharina and “The Green Shamrock” was born - the beginning of a wonderful journey.................................................................................. Musical biography of Karl-Heinz Ehret: guitar, singer and founder of the band - At the age of 35 Karl-Heinz taught himself the guitar. 4 years later he founded his first band and gave guitar lessons. Already being an active member in his church and community, he very soon played first chorals on the guitar at the Evangelical Church in his home town, Neckarsteinach. After many guest performances in several bands, Karl-Heinz founded the Irish folk band “Giants Causeway” in 1998, which split up in 2001. Karl-Heinz then worked on other musical projects, and played the guitar in musicals and gospel choirs. In 2002 he founded the band “Wolkenflug” and after a six-year-break from Irish music he met violinist Franziska Langendörfer in March 2006 and the idea of a new Irish folk band arose. Katharina, who already sang solo in Karl-Heinz’s band “Wolkenflug”, joined them, and the new Irish folk band “The Green Shamrock” was born….. They are now known well outside their local region.
