Phil Spector, George Harrison and Keith Richards covered in orange sherbert then being licked and mauled by 1000 chihuaua puppies.
Having entered rock n roll with more than a passing glance to heroes like Velvet Underground and the Beatles, the Gronks: 'present a compelling vision of 60's pop - meets post-modern big muff' (NME). But more than vintage guitar pedals made of disposed Russian tank parts, more than recording to 2" tape, even more than a multitude of "duel-fuel" sessions with obscure keyboards, tasty expensive American guitars, wall of sound recording and stacks of energy. We bring to you an uncomplicated celebration of rock 'n' roll music. We hope you like it.
Hey there it's the THE GROnKS.Yeah awwlllrrrightttt!! How the hell have you been, We've been playing some gigs, rehersing with beer and hyping up to recording the next Gronks album. Scotty and Ken are writing like ZZ Top meets early Beatels..welll Van Halen meets Jonathon Richmond fucking Talking Heads in a bubblee bath of LOVE.
Knallt gut, Melodie inklusive.
Yeah, I know the question. What the hell is a Gronk? Well the short answer is this band named after an obscure comic book villain. The long answer is there is a bunch of other references to the word "Gronk" across the wiki-verse. But for our purposes, it's an Aussie band that clings to the geeky, quirky and melodic. Opening with "Dirt" that resemble a Devo meets Ween guitar antics and a simple beat. There are bits of Pink Floyd and Midnight Oil you'll hear on "Tribeca" and it's pretty catchy too. The album's songs all have the harmonies and hooks that power pop fans will cling too. "Touch the Sun" is a cleaner Guided By Voices-like track that hums along in an 80's like fashion. And "Pot O Gold" has a shimmering dreamy quality that evokes great 60's psyche pop like The Move and The Nazz. My favorite song here is "Robot" which references The Ramones, GBV and has a solid hook full of great effects. The very XTC like "Suicide and Fine Wine" is a welcome surprise here. In addition, a sweet Beatlesque "la-la" chorus finds it's way on "Birds Buzzin." Another band to use for comparison here is The Lucky Bishops with less guitar fuzziness and more "Gronkiness." Most songs here shine (other than the snoozer "Language") and worthy of your ipod playlist. Get it and may the Gronk be with you.
Australian Import. Not sure how this one showed up here - It just did and I have no idea why, how or who they are and I've been trying to find out - but I did find THIS out. The Gronks are two blokes from New South Wales recording at home in a pop groove. Touchstones include Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Big Star, Beatles, the Ramones and Devo. Instrumentation is minimalist stripping the songs to their bare bones, often only guitar and drums. And the bones are good. Think of them as a more organic Field Music. “Dirt” opens things up with a chanted, “Worms! Dirt! Worms! Dirt!” before settling into a sultry groove while the boys extol the virtues of life on the farm. With a fatter bottom, “Tribeca” might have come off an early Move album. “Pot o Gold” also has unmistakable Move vibe. The Gronks evoke Pink Floyd on “Touch the Sun,” but all these musical reference points don’t detract from the Gronks’ original sound, defined by their minimalist arrangements and distinctive vocals. When they add a flute, as they do on “Happens (All the Time,”) it enhances rather than detracts from their minimalism. Very Highly Recommended! (Mike Baron)

Read The Gronks Recording Bio:
The Gronks are based around two singer songwriter pals that decided to write an album with no pre-determined style agenda and a heady disregard to conventional pop formats. For months they conducted spontaneous writing sessions in darkened studios letting the music take them where it dared. The result is a pastiche of glam rock, alt country, lounge and indie rock, brimming with melodies and stream of consciousness lyrics. The Gronks are no strangers when it comes to recording so they set about it with vigour over several rocket-fuelled sessions, with legendary knob twiddler Russell Pilling, at the cozy Damien Gerards in Balmain. A few guests popped in to help, like Marty Wilson Piper who tears it up on the overtly rock track Touch the Sun. Whilst recording to 2” tape with a live band (including APRA stalwart Tim Denny on drums) plenty of digital trickery and analogue tom-foolery was employed to ease the songs into their natural state of being. In between sessions the live Gronks ensemble managed gigs at the Peats Ridge Festival and the delightful Lilypad stage at the Surry Hills Festival. The irascible Jorden Bach mixed with his highly evolved German ears in his Orange Room and finally King Willy ‘Spock’ Bowden put the project to bed at his plush Stanmore mastering studio. Resplendant with fine wood panelling and an uber luxurious couch inherited from Festival Records. Arty types Flying Sausage put their hands up to make the clip for 1st single Dirt, a Napolean Dynamite-esque homage to unpleasant bosses and we know a few. Some musical reference points might help at this stage and surely REM, Wilco and Crowded House would be useful places to start. Meaningful pop music with manners and a hint of the Good Weekend.
