Guttercats are a Coventry based, UK Band! Who have been around in various forms since the early 90's!The band has had a revolving door of musicians with the only two constants being Stevo Kifaru and Andy Guttercat.
The band features various ex-members of The Long Range Weather Forecast, Fridayz Angelz, Malias, Splif Vica and current, reggae band, Kifaru..
And so onto a bit of history.....Take a deep breath...
The Gutter Cats, only started out as a bit of fun with Andy Guttercat and his friend Iain. We thought we'd support a mates band, Shady Deal, who later went on to become Betty Swollocks (check out their MySpace page), and do some acoustic and vocal cover tunes. We enjoyed it so much that we began to form a band along the way. So during the next few gigs. Stevo was signed up on drums. Another guy called Fred joined us on bass (real name Steve, we couldn't have 2 Steve's in the band, so he was rechristened 'Fred' after the band 'Right Said Fred', for obvoius reasons!)
After Iain left we proceeded to find another guitarist... one was Paul and another a friend of Stevo's ,Will. He lasted a couple of gigs before finding another guitarist called Paul, who we renamed Finn. Confused you will be as in a later line-up Paul (now with Kifaru) also joined us on guitar for a short lived line-up, towards the late 90's band split.
The history of The Gutter Cats is a chapter in it self. Writing has begun but it's incomplete and memories are needing a jolt to complete it! (Come on guys...type some thoughts down please)
So after many gigs, demo's, fallouts, line-up changes and hillarity, we called it a day. We actually split the band up, one night, while on stage after one too many shandies, ending in fisticuff's, before getting back together for a couple of reunions /farewell gigs. One of these last gigs was at Stevo's wedding in 2003. Regrouping the line-up of Stevo Fred Paul and BlackPool and Andy
A new version of the Guttercats, reformed, for fun back in September 2007, to see if the old magic was still there, borrowing members of Kifaru. .....
And so the band continued working on the new project....Kifaru Vs The Guttercats (This began as a side project to the band Kifaru, the hope was to play some gigs, as Kifaru were the No1 priority). During this time also a chance meeting in Tesco's of Andy and TL Guttercat and some shopping trolley chat.... TL guttercat was invited down to rehearsals for a jam... and the rest is history...
Summer 2008.... The current line-up is made up of 2 members of Kifaru, 2 ex-members of Malias and 2 ex-members of The Gutter Cats! Andy, Stevo, Jason and T.L.......
During August 2008 the band played a storming return to form set, with their 1st gig supporting Kifaru . But the band as they were, were suddenly thrown into disarray with the shock decision of Jase, quitting, the Guttercats, in order to put all his energy into his other band, Kifaru!
Original bassist Fred and new boy, Jamie were approached with a view to filling the vacant bass spot.... And so followed rehearsals during October and November with both guys invited to join the band, on bass and 2nd guitar respectively. During those rehearsals though it was becoming quite apparent that Fred just wasn't fitting in with the bands current format. Fred had been away from playing in a band/the Guttercats (aside from the few reunions) for about 12 years.
The band decided that the only way forward was to disband at the end of November 2008 and re-evaluate things in 2009.
January 2009, Spurred on by a support gig with the David Lee Wrath band in February, the band re-formed, minus Fred...
The band started looking and auditioning for a replacement bass player during January..... and decided on, Jan (the Terminator), as the new bass player. Jan has played in several bands in the Northampton area including being in the band Splif Vica along with Tone and Jamie in 2007.
So the band has gone almost full circle line-up wise and also a gig supporting Betty Swollocks was played in April 2009, which was just like old times.
During April, Jamie stepped down from the band due to some personal issues. We carried on rehearsing as a 4-piece.....
Two days before the Betty Swollocks gig and 25 mins before rehearsals Jan was replaced by stand in bass player/guitarist Blackpool (Paul)..... Jan had handed in his notice earlier in the day and expected to fulfill rehearsal and gig commitments until the end of May.... but due to personal and musical differences he was dumped the same day.....
Pete whom we had auditioned at the same time as Jan, joined us on bass during June and rehearsals are back in full swing. Also during July Blackpool returned to play 2nd guitar with us bringing the band back up to a 5-piece.
August 2009.... more unrest in the camp as Pete quit, and was replaced on bass by Aidan, due to disagreements and personality clashes....
So onwards and upwards....Aidan was christenened Old No7 Guttercat...
The band had a return to form gig, at the Rising Sun in Coventry on the 30th August, with an encouraging and highly entertained audience, even with some minor technical problems...The band ripped the place up and got 3 encores...
