In a recent interview, singer/guitarist Matt Morales revealed the origin of his band The Hacks:
"So I was, like, just about to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge and stuff but as most of you know I'm a huge procrastinator. I was sitting on the ledge chatting with Sal Calanni on my cell phone, being unmotivated as usual. At some point during the conversation we thought it would be cool to put together a punk rock band. I was all like, 'cool man, lets do that'. Its kind of embarrassing to admit to being so lazy but its the truth."
Shortly after their conversation Matt and Sal talked drummer Max Curry and bassist Kevin Camia to join the band, much to their chagrin. After a few practices the newly formed Hacks took the stage at the Rockit Room in San Francisco and thorougly impressed the audience. Shocked, the band started to book more and more shows and are now becoming favorites in the San Francisco music scene.
Tradgedy struck the band in late 2006 when Kevin Camia overdosed on Heniken and Camel cigarettes, leaving the group bassless. Unfortunately, Matt somehow convinced Pete Franco, an extremely accomplished bassist who formerly played for the extremely popular country/rock band The Mother Truckers, to replace Camia.
"I can only hope Pete will forgive me for making him take such a far step down in the musical ladder." -Matt Morales
"We're just out to make people happy and rock out, you know?", says fellow singer/guitarist/songwriter Sal Calanni. A bold, uplifting mantra, yes, but Max Curry definitely put things best during his Rolling Stone interview:
"Duhhhhh"
