   About The Happy Clams

After the demise of the band Poor Impulse Control in 1997 Rawbird Leigh and Paul Pot("Plastic TV Land on Acid & Gail and the Fudgepackers) joined forces with Gail Todd (bass player and "Gail" in the Fudgepackers and former DJ at KALX in Berkeley) to form the Happy Clams in Mudville, CA. They played a couple of years of gigs at parties, most notably a couple at the Temple Room of an Aleister Crowley group in Oakland and a big party in the foothills of the Sierras. . Playing a gig in San Jose they were asked if they knew any songs that people in the bar might know. Paul Pot said, "We know an Elvis song."

"What song?" it was asked.

"Do the Clam."

"I think you'd better get off the stage," was the cool response.

It continued on along those lines, during which time the bass player mysteriously disappeared. Trevor Wencil (now the drummer of Hijack the Disco) took up the bass role in 2002. The band played played a number of gigs, opening for The Cables featuring Mike Flinn. (see the poster gallery at www.thehappyclams.com for dates of the shows). The bass player mysteriously disappeared.

Guy Michel, who Paul Pot met while playing open mics, joined the band in May 2003 at a show that was billed "In the Pink" at a coffee shop called A Cuppa Tea. There were to be a number of shows at A Cuppa Tea over the next couple of years. At each of the Cuppa Tea shows the band would give out a piece of ephemera. These never-to-be-seen-again items ranged from buttons to Xmas ornaments to hankies, all emblazoned with the Happy Clams logo! Some day they will actually be worth the time and materials used to make them.

In May 2005, the Happy Clams embarked upon the recording and production of their first CD under the watchful eye of Harlan Hollander. Things progressed. Things slowed. The watchful eye got sleepy. Years passed. Lines appeared on faces. The salmon disappeared. Still no meaningful contact with any lifeforms in the universe other than our own......... But hey, the CD is now in stores (we somehow managed to finish the project in less time than Guns and Roses). We looked around and discovered that yet another bass player had disappeared. Harlan Hollander's watchful eye reopened and he stepped into the breach to fill the void while a search took place. No stone was left unturned. No roadside ditch was left unexamined. The bay was dredged. Suspects were questioned.

In 2008, Gail Todd returned to the Happy Clams. There is joy in Mudville.

To those who may not have heard, our dear brother Dickie Peterson (OF BLUE CHEER) has passed away from what I understand was liver cancer or complication there of. He left us 10-12-09 in Germany at at 5:00am.

Dickie will be greatly missed by many. He told me that he didn't have "fans" he had "friends" and I know he valued each and every one of them. From the beginning Dickie chose his own path through this journey we call life paving the way for those who dared to follow. Dickie was not just a pioneer in Rock & Roll music but also a LEADER that will continue to guide musicians and music lovers for ever.

I know he wouldn't want us to be sad and I know he's up there turning the Angel's harps up to "11"! Blow the Golden Gates off the joint Dickie!

Much love.....

I'M FORWARDING THIS LETTER TO YOU BECAUSE I KNOW U HAVE GREAT STORYS TO TELL.

dirksen book
Hi,
I am working on the Dirksen Book, see below, and I am looking for stories by people who encounter him. If you have a story send it in for the project Also could you forward this email to anyone you know who might have a Dirk story. Send to: dirksenstories@gmail.com
Hope all is going well.
ciao. James Stark

Many of you were aware the Dirk Dirksen had been working on a book, to be published by Last Gasp, about his life especially his days with the Fab Mab and beyond. I was in the Last Gasp Publishing offices a couple of weeks ago on other business when they pointed out three boxes full of paper "There is Dirksen's book, make it happen."
When I got home and sorted through the contents, lots of posters, newspaper articles, list of shows at the Mab and Off Broadway and an interview of Dirk interviewing himself. I did find a couple of stories people had written about their experiences with Dirk. After reading those I realized that almost everyone had a Dirk story.
I am asking people to send their Dirk Stories, the good, the bad and the ugly. We will print most of them depending on space and content. Each person's story that is published will receive a copy of the book when it is publish. If you have a photo of yourself with Dirk send that along.
Sending your story to the address below means you release rights to Last Gasp and in consideration you will be paid the sum of One U. S. Dollar and with a copy of the finished book for the stories used.
Along with your story we will need your mailing address. End date for receiving stories is January 31, 2009
Send to: dirksenstories@gmail.com
Please forward to any one who may have had contact with Dirk.

Thank You James Stark and Last Gasp

PS: We are looking for photographs of Dirk if you have any let us know about the content and if possible a low res.
