My music history:
I think i first got interested in music somewhere at the beginning of elementary school (6-7 years old). Together with some friends we enjoyed picking up on some tracks we heard on the radio. In those days we called ourselves 'housers'(although we could be better categorized as listening to pop music. So by the age of 12, i already had my own collection of 'pop cd collectors'. After a while we were more attracted to the better songs on those albums and for sure those songs who had a male singer performing some kind of 'rap music', we didn't really know we were enjoying rap music until The Fugees came along. This resulted into the purchase of a real album by me: The Score (The Fugees), soon followed by some other classics from Nirvana and (The) Offspring. I even called myself a rapper then (instead of Houser), who got me a lot of critics along my friends. Rap music didn't get such high standards then by us. So for a year (or two) i got less interested in music, seeing myself as someone outside the music-scene. I somehow had enough of all the mumbojumbo around it, and found it very hard to profile myself into the music scene. But that didn't last long, as i found out about the 'alternative scene', where you present yourself as beeing a gabber or a skater, I choose the latter. Although I never tried skating 'ps-ed' that i was not an actual skater (with the exception of some roller blading, but then again, who didn't in those days?). So thanks to Studio Brussel my music identity could grow and started to listen to rock music, by us perceived us as alternative. We didn't really listen to nothing of the harder stuff though, that was never really my cup of tea. But in that same time, the discovery of the music library in Kortrijk (free for youngsters like us) was a big blessing. Those were the moments where we didn't need to bargain anymore to get a certain copy of a cd by a friend. We could just pick it up at the library. This was bound to be our ultimate music source until our good friends of Napster came along. We still had to pay by minute, but a new source was found. So gradually evolved out of the hands of 'alternative' music stations and libraries into the peer2peer networks of the internet. Going along with this trend, my music choice also evolved. In the library we slowly grew tired of the rock (and everything that evolves from it) and grew into other music genres as triphop and hiphop. Where me, i called myself triphopper, my best friend called himself hiphopper. Both of us going for a scene who was rather controversial for our environment.
But eventually we settled our differences and also opened up our doors for each others style (triphop - hiphop). There it was, the last barrier was broken, also hiphop could now be considered as a respected genre. Which isn't as obvious for a lot of people. I suppose the mainstream sh*t we see on the tele could be seen as the cause. You could say, the top of the bill, for me, is the genre avanthop, who is able to represent most of the genres i past through. But if you would ask me the question, like in the old days, what music i listen to? Well, as you can see, i have really a lot of trouble answering that question, let's just say you may hang me if i loose my ears.
So for myself, i don't have a background of any music instrument or anything. But still i like to, on an amateur level, go and try and make some of my own music, based on the genres i listen to. But as you can hear, I am such a perfectionist, that i can't seem to complete a song.
