NEW SINGLE OUT ON ITUNES NOW - Helltown Harold Honey – Ready to launch Harold Honey – a blues guitar player with punk sensibilities – describes himself as ‘an old school DIY kind of guy just hoping to get a break.’ That’s a typical bit of modesty from the talented Californian songwriter. But, with the release of his latest single ‘Helltown’, that break has just come a lot closer. ‘Helltown’ is a single of intent from Harold. It is a record that harks back to the sounds of the fifties and sixties while still managing to sound thoroughly modern. There are elements of Hendrix, The Pixies and even Johnny Cash mixed in, yet it sounds as incendiary and fresh as anything that the Black Keys can produce. Strung together by producer and pianist Adam Marsland – who lists the Beach Boys among his former collaborators – and using the insanely talented rhythm section of Teresa Cowles and Perry Ostrin, ‘Helltown’ is as polished as single as you are likely to hear. If that wasn’t enough for you, the b-side ‘Hollywood Jesus’ is equally brilliant. Again, simplicity is the key. There is no fancy technological gadgetry on this record, but there is a subtlety to the sound, aided and abetted by former Bob Dylan producer Andrew Bush. Harold also employs the evocative pedal steel guitar sound of Roberto Battaglia to create a song that looks set to be an instant classic. This single – one that will propel Harold into the kind of stardom he deserves – follows the success of his eponymous debut album. That 2010 release had elements of the best artists of the past and present – from Radiohead and the White Stripes to Neil Young and even Tom Waits – yet still retained Harold’s unique voice. Having garnered some great reviews, Harold has spent the intervening time honing his craft in the studio. This release shows that it was time well spent. Harold Honey – Simple, Brilliant Sometimes making great music can be a pretty simple process. That’s how post-grunge punkster Harold Honey sees it anyway. And with a first album, the eponymous ‘Harold Honey’ in the can and ready to hit the shelves, it seems likely that this one-man musical force is likely to find a fair few fans agreeing with him. Working with a classic, stripped-down sound driven by a rhythm section comprising bassist Allen Mehlhaff and drummer Alejandra Arellano, Harold’s music is pointedly uncomplicated. The recording process follows the ‘go into the studio, play the tunes and hit record’ ethos that has served so many great bands so well over the years. The result is a debut album whose rawness recalls some of the great recordings of bands such as The Pixies, The Stooges and The White Stripes. Yet Harold’s own influences go way beyond one particular sound, as can be heard throughout this varied, layered, intelligent record. There are elements of Radiohead, Neil Young and even the vocal stylings of Tom Waits in Harold Honey’s music. But the whole is much more than the sum of its parts on this album. Maybe the difference is that this is an artist who has grown up making music, but has waited until he has matured as a performer before presenting his talent to the world. He has honed his skills playing live shows across America. You can hear in his infectious, insistent riffs and funny, knowing lyrics that Harold Honey is an artist who has been around the block. And come back much better for it. Ultimately, he knows this album is his first step to making the leap into being a full-time musician. But if the quality on show here is anything to go by, it won’t be long before Harold Honey can leave the day job behind.
