Jakob Seidensticker and Henrik Raabe met for the first time in 1994, sharing a love of dirty electronic sounds with a clear bass line. Since this fateful fusion their joint project The Havana Boys has created a prolific output of fine electronic masterpieces. The boys sound rests somewhere comfortably between fresh beats, dub and house. In 1998 the Nexus Clubnight in Hamburg's famous Mojo Club drew serious attention from worldwide club music aficionados, and the music of The Havana Boys was right in the middle of it mind-blowing every night it was reported.
In 2000 their tight electronic live performances had gained such a following that they joined the nationwide Mojos tour Original Jazz Rockers. Their skills as remixers were also showcased on the Mojo Remix Album part 2 with Dave Pike's Mathar and their first EP limited tour edition was released on FREE FORM Records. Quite a year it would seem.
It did not take the boys long for their follow up album to surface.. . The First Strike. Released in February 2001 on Jubilee Records, the LP combined the ever growing creativity and stylistic flexibility of The Havanas, taking their listeners on a journey of unique beats and heavy progressions, celebrated as a huge success throughout Germany on their next tour.
Wasting no time, the boys released their next long player only six months later, striking while the iron was getting hotter. Under the pseudonym The Egocentric - World Domination (same old dream) was released on Hamburgs house / electronic powerhouse label ROI/TOI. The tracks demonstrated an even broader range of creative influences from the boys and led to several gigs at Germany's biggest festivals like Sonne, Mond, Sterne, Nature One and Lovefield. These shows cemented their ability to set the masses on fire when let lose on stage.
The third album release Burnin' Dragon (October 2002, Jubilee Records)was the ultimate crystallisation of their concept of setting minds and bodies on fire through raw musical energy. There is absolutely no way to resist the boys when they get stuck into tracks like I Know or 707 in front of a big audience. What is the source of the Havanas abundant energy we ask?
The answer to this question turned up two years later it seems, it is called The H.B. Source (October 2004, Jubilee Records). Here the Havanas went for more driving beats, catchy vocals, uplifting instrumentals, and more weird electronic moments than you can poke a stick at. From sophisticated techno to pop to roots-dub and thrilling film score-jazz, The H.B. Source lifted the boys up to the Olympic level of the international electronic elite. Well equipped with a floor-killing remix by Germanys most advanced trance scientists Einmusik, the single A question off Düff went straight to the top ten German Club Charts.
Riding on the wave of their new success and looking for a different angle, The Havanas went their separate ways with Jubilee Records in 2005 and were swiftly on the look out for a new partner to smoke cigars with. They didnt have to wait long, in January 2006 they released their first EP on Voidcom/Ministry of Sound (Germany) and off they went. After we've got started (January 2006, voidcom) is the logical progression of the boys The H.B. Source but according to the guys themselves there is even more drive and aggression with this one, its more for the floor rather than just the living room. At the same time Japans well-known KSR label was also pressing the album up which helped to rapidly stretch their market outside Europe.
While Ministry of Sound (Germany) is currently filling their most famous compilations (neue heimat, the annual, clubbers guide to Berlin etc.) with the latest Havana boys tracks, the Havanas Herr Seidensticker and Herr Raabe continue to hide out in their secret laboratories, implementing and creating more follow-up releases while planning the final conquest of planet earth and
what lies beyond....
