Sounds Like
"Before the launch of Kalimaa’s set comes an ever-recommendable performance by The Hazelman Brothers. This fraternal three-piece seem to go from strength to strength with new songs shining. Most notable is the closing Something’s Written that spirals off in unexpected directions with new-plunged depths and striking originality, while the opening Put You In A Song and the Biblical Doomsday stun with their rich and faultless harmonies. What also impresses is the level of guitar arrangements, or guitarmonies if you will. There are 18 strings on stage and, during their newer songs especially, each one stands out. It’s not hard to see The Hazelmans as being a fitting support for Fleet Foxes; their dry and distinctly Australian sounds sound effortlessly original in this most populated of genres."

"This song draws you in immediately. You feel like you could be in the backseat doing the 'do do dos, do do dos..' with them, pitch the tent, watch the sun go up and down. You've just tapped into the unique communal experience that is the Meredith Music Festival, a 3 day musical delight distilled beautifully into 5 1/2 minutes."

"Opening for Kaki King, the solitary “girl with a guitar”, were locals The Hazelman Brothers. The three lads set the stage with their trio of acoustic guitars, along with some extremely polished harmonies. A great local act to keep an eye on, the brothers ended the set with a cover of Bjork’s Hyperballad, to which their vocal harmonies really made the song their own."

"There's a gentle warmth to some of their songs. With an eye for detail, the brothers transport us to their own urban environment. In song, they capture the side streets and simple shops, the loves and losses of their peers, and subsequently reveal a greater human truth. But don't relax too far into the comfort of your beer. Their harmonies can also twist and mesmerise like a three headed cobra."

The Hazelman Brothers are Chris, Mick and Stu and they've been gigging around Melbourne for the last 7 years. It must be something in the blood that produces stunning 3-part harmonies, combined with complex 3-part guitar layering and a stompbox. Their sound is a unique and intricate blend of folkish-countryish-fingerpickish-poppish-darkish-melancholish-weirdtimesignaturish styles.
Comparisons have been drawn to artists such as Crosby Stills and Nash, Josh Pyke, Darren Hanlon, Kings of Convenience, and Little River Band.
You can pick up The Meredith EP at a gig, recorded & mixed by Evan Bywater in a downstairs room near Smith St, Collingwood. The first EP is also available - it was produced in one day by Mark Woods at his Carisbrook studio, not far from the brothers' home town of Talbot in country Victoria. They are currently recording for their debut album.
Stay tuned...

Hello!!! It's been awhile - sorry there hasn't been in any Australian shows for many months but we've been busy in Europe with a bunch of touring and we're now recording our new album in Berlin (scheduled for release in March). But to make up for it, here's a big (and silly) Merry Christmas from us (and from some hippos too) :
Some bold new artistic direction? Nah, Just us being silly!!! We did this track for our label's "Black Snow - the completely different Xmas compilation". (and of course, visit our youtube channel for a high quality version)
Wishing you a very silly Silly Season and we'll see you back in Australia sometime in 2010!
