Heritage Survival is a group of young talented musicians from Zimbabwe who have relocated in Manchester. it was formed in 2002 by Zivai Guveya with his other band members.
Our music is called Afro-jazz and its a fusion of guitars and a zimbabwean traditional instrument called Mbira which is" thumb-piano" in English. We have recently recorded our debut album entitled PASI, meaning This World. We have performed in a number of prestigious venues around the UK including Ocean in London, Manchester Academy, Womad Festival, Luton Carnival, Manchester Carnival and supporting the famous Lagbwaja from Nigeria and the 'In The City' trade fair in Manchester. Some few to mention.
ZIVAI is the lead Singer/Lead guitarist/composer. He has loved music since he was young, he started to play with the lion of Zimbabwe Dr. Thomas Mapfumo, when he was aged 15/16 and from there he has never stopped loving his music and playing. He also participated in "Olivin" advertisment with Oliver Mutukudzi who's one of the biggest musicians in Zimbabwe. After he recorded 5 albums with Dr Mapfumo he moved to England and started The Heritage Survival Band with his band members from Zimbabwe. Some of the Heritage band members have worked with the leading lights of Zimbabwean Artists such as the likes of Andy Brown, Alick Macheso, Tongai Moyo, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe and Oliver Mutukudzi. The band have also backed Fred Gwala and Platform One sharing the stage with Zola from South Africa mid 2005 and 2006.
PAUL KUZINYA is one of Harare's finest drummers. He has recorded several albums with Madzibaba Nicholas Zakhariya, one of the great Harare musicians. He recorded a well known album called "Samanyemba" in 2002 with Tongai Moyo. Since the day he was able to hold his drumsticks he has never put them down. It is mesmerizing what he does when he plays on stage.
NORMAN[jekanyika] the bass player has worked with Savannah Arts Marimba from Mbare in Harare. He has also worked with Dzinde Re Musha youth edition[Dye Hard Crew] together with Zivai in 1998. He is an amazing choreographer, dancer, mbira player and singer. He has loved his music since he was young. When it comes to the performance, he is very energetic and enjoys what he's doing.
ADRIAN MCINTYRE who is the youngest talented rock-guitarist from England worked with the semi-famous Stolen Thunder for 5 years and sold 2 singles that sold really well. He is only 16 and is already an accomplished musician and is doing very well considering he's only been with the band for a short time. He is learning traditional music that he has never heard or played before.
THOMSON CHAUKE is an energetic performer who has worked with the late Simon Chimbetu, Aleck Macheso and is now playing percussion, backing vocals, drums and dances with Heritage.
ELVIS GUMORAZVO is one of the greatest dancers and percussionist in Zimbabwean music. He also has worked with Tongai Moyo on "Samanyemba" album which was released in 2002. He is now with Heritage Survival and he creates amazing dancing and he does an extrodinary performance.
We also lead dance, percussion, songs and drumming workshops in schools, colleges, community centres and at festivals around the UK. Besides doing the music we also make marimba (xylophones). All the Heritage Survival band members have all shown their light in Zimbabwe.
We are currently recording our second album, (The Challange Of Afro-Fusion), which will be out during the summer of 2007. We are working extremely hard to pass our message and good music to the people. We hope that our fans will enjoy our performance and the good music we have got for them.
Thanks for the add. The band sounds fantastic, especially the tracks from "Pasi". Will play some on the show this Thurs. Will try and catch you live sometime this year. Hope you can meet "The Challenge Of Afro-Fusion" and develop your style without compromising that powerful roots sound that you've got. Andy Healey (presenter, Africabeat)
