Influences
Most of our influences come from the ..et groups that played Hot Jazz in the early part of the 20th century. Specifically, we play the original arrangements of the bands of:
Fletcher Henderson, Gene Goldkette Orchestra, Coon-Sanders' Nighthawks, King Oliver's Dixie Syncopators, Ed Kirkby & the Charleston Chasers, Duke Ellington & His Famous Orchestra, George Olsen & His Music, Jack Hylton, Rodger Wolfe Kahn, The Casa Loma Orchestra, and The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra.
Arrangers include: Fletcher Henderson, Bill Challis, Don Redman, Elmer Schoebel, and Duke Ellington.
Sounds Like
We most sound like the greatest of today: Vince Giordano & His Nighthawks Orchestra, in addition to the bands mentioned above. For the most part, however, we sound like ourselves, a Hot Jazz band with some great old songs!
The High Society Orchestra was founded in 1976 by Dr. Warren "Bud" Trow. Today, leader Dan Gabel continues the band's legacy. We are dedicated in playing the original songs and arrangements from the 1920's era of "Hot Jazz." Everything from "The Charleston" to "Are You Lonesome To-Nite" can be found in our repertoire. The Orchestra is what is known as a decktet, and has 10-14 musicians in the group. The original instrumentation of 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, 3 saxes, violins, piano, traps, banjo, and tuba are employed to (re)create the original sounds of the original Orchestras of the 1920's and 1930's.
