INTERVIEW FROM THE WILLITS NEWS 08/11/09: REGGAE RISING SELLS OUT
Sunday's events began solemnly for locals as Laytonville native, reggae singer and producer Moese Angel, who died in an ATV accident near his home in Laytonville on October 13, 2008, was remembered and honored by his family sister Luna and parents Akua and Vidal and his bandmates, The High Grade All-Stars: Jackson Zentner, Jamal Andrews, Mike Marshall and Luke Andrews. The musical tribute included songs from the All Stars' upcoming album to be released within the month.
Guitarist "Blue" Luke Andrews said the band played as if Moese was with them and still a powerful inspiration.
"I was really happy," said Andrews, "though it was emotional at first. I think the performance was incredibly uplifting for everyone in the band.
"Moese was our brother, the ringleader. This was his festival and he got us out here every year. He would have loved this lineup of artists this year, so this was special."
Andrews indicated that although Angel's had been a crushing loss for all of them, they were continuing to produce music as a group and individually.
Andrews is Julian Marley's guitarist and will tour with the Uprising Band during Marley's US tour.
