Lional Freeman founded the Hip Hop Project in 1995 in an effort to give Chicago hip-hop artists a media to express their opinions and showcase their talents. Now, nine years later The Hip Hop Project still airs every Saturday night and has become a staple in Chicago’s hip-hop community. Broadcasting out of Loyola University’s Rogers Park campus, The Hip Hop Project combines live mixing and social commentary that you cant hear anywhere else on the dial. It’s 7:30-11:30 pm timeslot provides Chicago with a better opportunity to hear what’s going on in the city we call home.
Local talent has always remained our concentration, but we still offer the highest quality hip-hop from across the globe. During their tenure on our show, TernAround, Roper and Eves continue to mix live weekly; a procedure still not used in most college radio shows in Chicago. Since WLUW also broadcasts over the Internet at www.wluw.org, Chicago now has a stronger voice. We also provide out of state artists the chance to broaden their horizons by doing live call-in interviews on our one of a kind radio experience.

Thanks to his older brothers Anthony was put on to the Hip Hop culture at a very young age. When he was 5 years old he would be at his grandma’s with his older brother listening to the “Rap Down” with Disco Dave (RIP) on a little beat up radio. He was immediately drawn to the music of KRS One, Public Enemy, EPMD, and many more.
As he grew older his understanding and appreciation of the music grew. For the longest he found himself just as a student of the music. During his highs school days he spent his time gambling and bootlegging with his people lil’ Mike, Paris, Hugo and John trying to save up his money. In his senior year of high school, he met up with the crew at The Hip Hop Project Radio show. He would occasionally visit the show as a fan bringing old tapes he had of the show.
Shortly after, he graduated and had saved up enough money to buy turntables and a mixer. Visits to the show became more frequent and he soon became a member of the show. He wasted no time putting his name on mixtapes and hustling again time putting his name on mixtapes and hustling again. Now DJ Monky can be heard spinning from time to time. Behind the scenes, he’s on the phones and sending out emails reaching to his favorite artists bringing interviews to the show. Thanks to the great influence The Hip Hop Project crew and others around him, in the short time since June of 03' he has found himself sharpening his skills and heavily involved in the Chicago scene.
Around 1998, I was introduced to Bast, Cosm and Rev.Rob in high school. Cosm was helping Brotha El and Ishmael (The hosts of TheHipHopProject at the time) with writing in the monthly newsletter that they produced. As Cosm visited the station more often, I started to get real interested in checking it out. I wanted to see what the studio looked like and how it was run. So Cosm invited me up there one week. I didn’t want to just show up and look like a groupie though, so I went to a record shop and bought some vinyl to bring to the show, just so I didn’t take up space. Before I knew it, I was buying records every weekend and bringing em to the show. Buying records is like crack man. I had a pretty good amount of records, so I bought my boy Ryan’s turntables and a GIANT Gemini mixer. HaHa
I started practicing more and more, making little bootleg mixtapes and showing em off to other kids at school. Me and Ryan started working on mixtapes, but nothing ever really came of it. But about a year or so later, I linked up with Fader Pilot (a young Dj from Skokie, IL.) and did a mixtape called “I’m With Stupid”. Pressing was very limited and so was the skill. Haha. But it was fun practice, and Cosm did the ill cover art. The only other mixtapes I did were “Premier of Alchemy” (an all Dj Premier and Alchemist mix) and I Co-Mixed “Chicago and Beyond” with Ternaround.
As far as WLUW is concerned, I soon became a regular. I was djing on the show every week and practicing my blending. But I knew that the show wouldn’t grow on just good mixing alone. So I began to network with people and push the word of the new HipHopProject (Cosm, Roper, Ternaround, Rev.Rob, Eves, Lanx). Not only locally, but I would call artists from all over the states and build with them, letting em know about the station, and eventualild with them, letting em know about the station, and eventually arranged live over-the-phone interviews with artists. From that point on, we (WLUW) took the next step into becoming the best radio station in Chicago.
And here we are. We got the website up (finally), we got interviews from Premier, Alchemist, Louis Logic, Necro, MOP, and Talib Kweli under our belt. Classic freestyles, exclusive cuts, dope blends, an incredible music library, and the dopest radio show in Chicago.
A Chicago North-sider born and raised on graf. & hip-hop in its purest era. A music collector since 92” back when Rocking Reds carried discount rap 12”.I Became a dj with equipment when a pair a technics blk were sold to me for 25 each from Dept, Ufo, Cya. In my college days of Fresno City College and College Of Seqouias "known" for spinning good music, in Visalia California with Bobby Naugle of FTK and Juan Naverette. Earned the opportunity to spin on B95 "the sure shot show" with A-1 and Dj Tommy Knocker. Put out two mix tapes with Dj Bobby Naugle, called “For The Kids and The Kitchen Sink”. Both were pushed by Vas of Bobbito’s footwork.
In the summer of 99 guest appeared as a Dj on The Hip-Hop Project and the rest is history.
Since then Djed and rocked local Chicago bar and parties, like Café Mi Sala, Rancho Luna, and Lava lounge.
Much respect to my influences and everyone who's helped me become betta, big ups and thanks for the love : My Crews THHP become betta, big ups and thanks for the love : My Crews THHP, UFO, CYA, Depte RIP, PS you will be missed, Mom & Dad, Charm, Cebl, Alex, Flow, Bently, Bobby, FTK, Sam Hanson, Roper, Cosm, Ternaround, Rev Rob, Monky, Mando, Cove,DJ Cease, Ish, Brother El, Jeff aka Gebl, LANX, Mute, Yuk, Size, Ryno & Paws, Daze, and Cesar see you in 5...
Dj TernAround, a legend in his own mind, started deejaying in 1992. Apprentice of the world renowned Dj Traxx, TernAround took on the task of spreading the gospel that is hip hop to its many followers and the misled many that thought Hip Hop was only what was being played on commercial radio and other evil outlets.
If you were in or around Lane Tech High School in the early to mid 90’s you were probably bobbing your head to one of TernAround’s latest mixtapes, when they were actually tapes. Fast forward to 1996 when TernAround was introduced to Vaughn C and Eric “The 10 Man”, hosts of the 6ft. Unda show on 89.3 fm WNUR. There TernAround along side Cache22 threw down the live-mix for about a year gaining knowledge of the radio game.
6ft. Unda was the springboard that led to his collaboration with Tim Stroh A.K.A. Maestro on his “Diggin’ in the Crates” show also on 89.3 FM WNUR. Then the guest spots began to pop up at other radio shows with the likes of the legendary J.P. Chill atadio shows with the likes of the legendary J.P. Chill at WHPK and Alex at WZRD. That led to the summer session at WNUR where TernAround hosted his on show titled “1200 Disaster Technics.”
After “1200 Disaster Technics” TernAround’s new home was “The Graveyard Shift” also at 89.3 FM WNUR. Once again the live-mix ass-whomp was handed out along side hosts Tony Caution, Silky P, and John Basics.
Enter 1998, the year Brother L and Ish passed the torch. The motley crew of 5 at the time that consisted of CosmRoks, Eves, Hector, Roper and TERNAROUND became the heirs to “The Hip Hop Project.” A new dynasty began…
