Sounds Like
"They sound like they’re inspired both by Charlie Mingus and some great New Orleans jazz band. I can’t quite make this band out, but I do know they sound very different from most of the mostly guitar-based bands here.”
-Bob Boilen on NPR's All Things Considered, SXSW 09 Preview
[The Hobo Banned] brought to mind a Salvation Army band playing in a junkyard while tripping on acid.
-Jim DeRogatis, Chicago Sun Times
"Composed of multi-instrumentalists, the ramshackle loping of the [eight]-piece solidifies into a pounding assault of chaos like a runaway horse carriage. While light and uplifting at times, the sound tends to offer an eerie darkness."
-Andrew Ritchey, Independent Weekly of Durham, NC
"Sgt. Dunbar and the Hobo Banned ... is a passionate collection of brass centric gypsy folk rock featuring a community of spirited voices and an array of instruments that sound like weathered antiques given new life."
-Obsession Collection
"...c’est un bordel mi-joyeux, mi-fataliste, la jolie excuse pour une trompette qu’on aimerait entendre plus souvent sans avoir à sortir ses disques de jazz, ou de blues." La Blogotheque
No matter who you hear in their sound or compare them to, there is loads here to love.
-My Old Kentuky Blog
I met Sgt Dunbar on a bus. He was headed to Kingston to catch freight out to Georgia. He gave me some of his Ten High whiskey. I doubt I'll ever see him again on account of he had pretty bad liver cancer (I saw the tumor). This band has everything and nothing to do with him.
Our new EP Charles Mingus' Garbage Pile is now available.
