Influences
Ben has this ancient toy poodle with terrible scars from an epic battle with baby field mice or something equally onerous. It's this influence that inspires us everyday to focus on being the men and women we have always known we could be if we just drank enough....
Sounds Like
bit of The Clash, sprinkle of The Smiths, dollup of The Pixies with a splash of The Beach Boys Pet Sounds. Serve with a side of britpop and finish with a healthy dose of DIY.
Former Andrea Doria frontman Dave Phillips has completed his first solo record entitled "Shirts and Skins." Studio jumping and hiring in a variety of players, Phillips works under the moniker "The Holding Pattern". The six song promotional copy is a true teaser for the full length to be released in Spring.
Let it be said that no song can sound old. For it is production that ages. Musical styles twist and morph and have the privelege to be reborn under a different production style. The Holding Pattern seems to take advantage of this formula. Pop tailored into production rather than production being thrown at songs. The out-of-air desperation of "Like a Lamb" is a strong contrast to the epic "Tether" but the variety is stabbing and inventive. The rising action, climax, and falling action of the record is evident from beginning to end of the EP as well as from beginning to end of the album. "When I Fall Apart (Pt. 1) and "When I Fall Apart" (pt. 2) are a great model for viewing, detailing the bright lights and the shadows of the project.
Editing is everything when assembling information. And this EP has a brave sense of editing. The Holding Pattern cites many influences but stays a safe distance from them. Dave Phillips has arranged light and hard pop and managed to maintain spacing and preserve phrasing. The studio hopping seems to have worked masterfully. Bob Courter, Mike Pack, Beau Bridges, and Phillips himself balanced the production with crisp tone-warm analog fuzz. Phillips is at his organic best with The Holding Pattern and cleared the great hurdle of understanding what an "album" truly is.
