The rebels have stormed and seized the airport. Rick Rubin has been made copilot at Columbia. Whirlybirds are landing on the embassy roof, making a last ditch effort to get our people out. Radiohead lets the fans decide how much their new album is worth. It's happening as you read this, and what was once the distant sound of shells exploding and the violet streak of tracer bullets is now the up close sound of hip-hop samplers, extroverted guitars, fuzz bass, dream-girl vocals, layered flutes, and metronomic drums.
And amidst all the flux, The Hong Kong comes clean with a new album of it's own. Slow Motion Gets Around is The Hong Kong's return to the mono-platter magic of it's 2003 release Rock the Faces. Who better to produce their follow-up then Cars front-man Ric Ocasek (Weezer, Bad Brains). His crunching guitar production is evidenced here on tracks like "Dreams" and "No Imagination", while you can sense his rhythmic presence on the slow lizard-crawl of "ROTA". Other notable tracks are the soaring, instant classic "Not Getting Better", and the raw, immediate punk of "Pink Piano".
